Udupi, Jul 4: Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj addressing a press meet here on Tuesday, July 3 stated that the movement of manganese ore-laden trucks has been banned during day time in the district limits. From now onwards only once in two days the said trucks can ply between 9 pm to 5 am, he stated.

He further said that since the ban was imposed on the transportation of manganese ore to Karwar in the month of June, all manganese ore laden trucks started plying to Mangalore through Udupi. 

The movement of these loaded trucks has resulted in extensive damage to the roads especially NH 17, he added and said that the number of accidents on this stretch is also increasing. As a result the district administration was forced to ban the movement of trucks loaded with manganese ore during the day time, he clarified.

Ponnuraj also stated that Udupi is a religious centre and tourists keep visiting the city from each and every corner of the country. As a result, the traffic is heavy in the region and overtaking these trucks has led to various mishaps in the district. 

He also stated that by permitting the lorries to ply once in two days in the night, mishaps can be avoided and at the same time, traffic disruption too will be eased. The order has been passed under Motor Vehicle Act.

During the meet the deputy commissioner called upon the police and RTO to implement the order effectively in the district.
