I always believe that everything in moderation (and in limits) is good, be it food, water, alcohol, etc. When it comes to alcohol, one should be a social drinker and drink in moderation, say during the weekend, etc. for the sake of enjoying and to unwind after a hard and hectic week. If one is habituated to alcohol, then that is very bad and there is nothing anybody can do about it, be it the Government, authorities, police, society, community, family or friends. In such situations, the best option for the Government would be to ensure that factory made foreign or local liqour is available for consumption with minimum (or no) excise duties and sales tax.

That way, no one will consume hooch, when the best stuff is available at very cheap rates. Classical example is Goa. When a bottle of feni is available for just Rs. 30/-, why will someone consume hooch, unless the consumer is either a hard case or goner?

However, will the Government implement this sagacious step. For them, it will be like shooting one's foot. This will put put an end to Police's prime source of income by way of "hafta" or corruption. From what little I know, Police have an unique way for distribution of hafya, in which everyone gets their cut - right up to the top most official and probably a part of it goes to the Chief Minister's Fund too.

By banning arrack, Karnatka state Government is making more & more people 'criminals' as they took illegal practice perhaps because of survival. The Government before considering the ban on arrack, which itself is not going to help to improve the society, atleast should have given a thought for those who lose their jobs and therefore their daily bread, a job security.

Now these people are forced to do illegal practice because of Government's thoughtlesness and later call them as 'criminals'. Do the Government think of welfare of these people and their dependants?
