Kundapur, Sep 9: ”The sand mining business which has been going on unrestricted in Herikudru has put the roads in deplorable condition and also damaged the H T P pipe which used to carry drinking water to the villagers. As a result the water scarcity has arisen in the whole island. Though the people complained and protested regarding the matter in front of panchayat office, the sand mining is still goes on without any interruption. If the same situation continues, we will have to intensify the fight,” said Prakash Mendon, the vice president of Udupi district panchayat participating in the symbolic protest held by Herikudru residents on Tuesday, September 8.
“Even though the police station officer informed in the emergency meeting that sand miners should get no objection cum permission letter, the sand miners have not responded accordingly. We will not let Herikudru become another Bellary.” Mendon added.
Taluk panchayat president Bhaskar Billava said “We will protest in front of Anagalli gram panchayat regarding the Herikudru sand mining problem. If the problem continues, then we will protest in front of district deputy commissioner of the district and even at Bengaluru.”
