Mangaluru, Sep 8: Rain reappeared in the coast, ending a dry spell extending to several days, on Monday September 7, in the form of continuous drizzle at some places and good rainfall in others, which extended to the night.
Sandeep (26), son of Sadashiva Poojary from Hitiyadka Padu Anjar, Karkala taluk, died due to lightning on Monday afternoon. He worked as night security staff of the local tin factory. He was busy pumping water to his agricultural field with the help of pump set, when lightning struck him. Sandeep suffered grave injuries in this incident, and died while being taken to the hospital at Manipal.
Sandeep was unmarried. He has left behind parents and an elder sister, who is married. He was a hard working man, and was pillar of support for his family.
A case of unnatural death was filed in Hiriyadka poilce station. Tahsildar, Gurpuprasad, revenue inspector, Devendra Nayak, and others visited the home of the victim, consoled the grieving family members and assured to provide them financial help from government soon.
While the pump shed suffered some damage, Malati (30), daughter of Kadya Marakala from this area, suffered minor injuries. An Acacia tree got split into two due to lightning, while some others suffered minor injuries.
LIghtning also damaged the house of Ramakrishna Bairy in Jannady, Kundapur taluk, on Monday afternoon. Power meter board, wiring and electrical equipment were damaged. The lightning made its way through the outer wall and hit the kitchen wall.
Almost entire Kundapur taluk received good rain on Monday. A peacock, which had unfurled its feathers and was dancing in an agricultural field at Herga in Udupi taluk died after having been hit by lightning on Monday. A crack appeared at the spot in the earth because of lightning.
Good rain was also reported from almost the entire coast except Sullia taluk. Temperature cooled down as a result. Many other parts of the state including Bengaluru, Ballari, Shivamogga, Chitradurga, Davanagere etc received good rainfall.
A meteorological department release said that some parts of the coast and most parts in the inland are expected to receive rains during the period till Wednesday morning.
