Puttur, Jun 23: Shiradi Ghat which, a prime link between Mangalore and Bangalore on National Highway 48 was blocked for about 10 hours on Saturday June 23.

Sources said that, fallen trees and overloaded lorries which skidded off the road resulted in traffic chok-a-block. The traffic was affected at about 2 am and the passengers had to spend about 10 hours on this Ghat. Finally the traffic was cleared at about 12 pm and the passengers who were traveling from Bangalore reached Mangalore at about 3 pm.

On the other hand, the road on Shiradi Ghat has severely been damaged owing to the movement of heavily-loaded lorries, passengers accused. The district administration has restricted the movement of loaded lorries on this route.

But the lorries are violating this restriction. Hence, the traffic is being affected regularly on this route, sources said. The road was cleared soon by removing the fallen trees. But it took long time to remove the two lorries had affected the traffic here.






At the same time, road was blocked between Subrahmanya and Uppinangady after Hosmath bridge submerged under swollen Kumaradhara river. The Netravati and Kumaradhara rivers have been overflowing owing to incessant rains in the area for the last couple of days. The highway too has submerged under water owing to which traffic has severely been affected.

 Meanwhile the road which connects Uppinangady and Puttur was also blocked owing to the fall of a tree on this road. Heavy storm in the last 30 hours has affected life and property in and around Uppinangady. In Nettabail here, a house was damaged after a tree fell on it.  In the same way heavy damage to property has been reported from Kootelu and Hirebandady too.
