Margao, Jun 23:  The Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) will observe a 'Consumer Health and Safety Awareness Week' from Sunday June 24 to Saturday June 30. The week-long program being organized on the occasion of state Consumer Rights Day on Monday June 25 seeks to address the need for awareness on consumer health and safety in the state.

During the week GOACAN will interact with the village-based consumer forums as well as the consumer welfare cells in educational institutions to create consumer awareness on health and safety issues in the local area.

Consumer forum volunteers will organize 'phone-in programmes' with the Goa police, directorate of health services, fire and emergency services, legal metrology, food and drug administration, inspectorate of factories and boilers, electricity and the transport departments.

Surprise visits and checks, collection of samples and photo documentation will be undertaken by GOACAN during the week in order to draw public and media attention to health and safety issues.

During the week the volunteers will also publicize the official telephone and fax numbers of these departments as well as that of the disaster management coordination committee at the taluk and district level.
