Distressed at inability to secure hostel accommodation, student ends life

Puttur, Aug 7: A student from Perabe village in the taluk committed suicide at her home on Thursday August 6. The teenager, Sumita (19) was overwhelmed at her failure at securing accommodation in Sullia hostel, and therefore, hanged herself, family sources said.

Sumita is survived by father, stepmother, and sister. She had stayed at the house of her maternal uncle at Sakleshpur while undergoing education till SSLC. She was interested to pursue PU education by staying at her native place, and had applied for accommodation in the backward classes students hostel at Sullia. After she failed to get admission into the hostel, she was preparing to approach for second PU examination at Uppinangady directly through a private tutorial.

In a death note left behind, Sumita said she is haunted by the memories of her mother, who hanged herself about ten years back. She explained that she had been disheartened at her failure to get admission into the hostel, and that this failure had grown into frustration towards life. Because of these reasons, she said, she had decided to end her life.

There was no one at home when the student killed herself by tightening a noose around her neck by using veil of her Churidar at her room on Thursday. A case ws registered in Kadaba police station about this incident on the basis of complaint filed by the father of the deceased.
