Mangaluru, Jul 28: On Monday July 27, Mangalore University admitted a 64-year-old student to its department of human consciousness and Yogic sciences. Ashok Kotekar (64), who has retired as a bank employee and has an undying interest in Yoga, sought and got this admission.

Ashok Kotekar is from Kotekar, Thokkottu near here. He is settled in the city. After completing B Sc degree in 1972, Ashok had joined Dena Bank. In 1986, he secured LLB degree. After retirement from the bank, he has taken up work as practicing lawyer. Ashok retired about three years back from the bank.

Ashok has been practicing Yoga as a way of better health since the last many years. In 1981, he had obtained diploma in Yoga. He had sought admission into the Yogic sciences department of the university with the desire to achieve something unique in this field. After securing good marks in the written examination for which he appeared, he got merit-based admission during the counselling held at the university premises on Monday.

Ashok's wife retired recently after working as the principal of a college.

Ashok thinks no age is too high to learn something new. He said he had joined the university because of his firm belief in Yoga and Pranayama as ways of living, and with the aim of achieving more in this field.

Congratulations on your persistence. Hope you will achieve what you are setting out to do. I agree with all commentators that age does not matter when it comes to pursuing academic goals. In my personal case I enrolled myself as a student at the age of 75 for a doctoral degree and received my doctorate at 80. Am still active in other ways, e.g. writing law books. So keep it up. If your health permits you have many fruitful years. Best wishes

Well that reminded me of Mr. Basermann , who joined the university of Aachen, Germany at the age of 67 to study Geology. He was my friends father. He used to frequently visit his son, who was residing in the same hostel block where I was staying in Berlin. When I asked him, what made him to join the University at this age. He smilingly replied- I just want to have more knowledge on the formation and structure of earth. Really amazing his interest in acquiring knowledge and enthusiasm at that age.

Age is not age it is the attitude towards life that matters. A young man may be old if he his pessimist and an old man may be young if he is optimist.
