Mangaluru, Jul 27: The students of Sarosh Institute of Hotel Administration on Monday July 27 held a protest against the college management over timings and alleging that it had not provided them various facilities promised in the prospectus, and that the facilities that were available were poor.

"The prospectus mentions that the college hours end at 3.30 pm everyday, but we are asked to be in college till 5 pm. The hostel facility is also poor. We were promised wi-fi connectivity, but it not been given," the students said.

"There is a gym but it has only dumbbells. There is no proper water supply in the college and hostel either," they claimed.

"The college promised free bus service but it is charging Rs 1,500 from each student who opts for bus facility. They can charge if they want to, but they take the shuttle the students in shifts with only a limited number of students taken in a single trip. Due to this, students are late to college and lose attendance," they said.

"We have paid Rs 62,000 as fees. We are not studying in a charitable institution. But even after paying so much we are not getting the facilities promised to us," the students lamented.

"In other colleges students have to stay back till 5 pm only if they have practicals but here college leaves at 5 pm everyday. By the time we reach home it is 8.30 or 9 pm, after which we have assignments to complete. Even in case of family emergencies they do not grant us leave," a student alleged.

"The hostel food is of poor quality and tasteless. Good food is served only to teachers and not to students. There is leakage in hostel and we reported it three weeks ago, but there has been no response. When parents come they are not given respect," another student alleged.

"We do not want to study here. But if we ask for transfer certificate (TC) the management plays games with us and make us run from pillar to post. Third year students are blackmailed saying they will not be allowed to participate in campus selection interviews," the students alleged.

"They will not give us attendance for holding this protest today but we demand that we get attendance," they added.

College denies allegations

Meanwhile, speaking to daijiworld, representative of the college management Mervin Pais denied the allegations levelled by the students and said, "It was never mentioned in the prospectus that college would leave at 3.30 pm. It is mentioned that college hours are between 9 am and 5 pm on weekdays and till 1 pm on Saturdays. Sometimes extra classes are conducted, because as per Mangalore University guidelines, we have to finish a certain number of classes."
Regarding bus facility, he said, "Free bus service was only for hostel students to bring them from hostel to college. For other students who come from their homes we charge for the bus service. It is a hotel management college and not a gymnasium."

About hostel food, he said everybody gets good food prepared under hygenic conditions.

On allegations regarding issual of TC, he said, "There are certain rules when applying for TC. It has to be done from the university. The college management has never prevented anyone from leaving the college. They are free to leave. We are just following rules. All the claims made by students are false."

My comments are not to hurt or disrespect ny1 bt only my thoughts about the problem on hand and my answers for the same. I from my side had done each and every thing possible to calm the storm when I was a student myself. I very well knew the difficulties of the lecturers as well as the students and had done all that I could do to keep things inside the closed doors of the college but alas I never got the support of my lecturers in doing the same. I feel sad to look at the present state of the college. Mark my words I believed that even if it is only dal/sambar/rasam and rice which could be offered to us, then why not make that dal/sambar/rasam and rice so tasty and hygienic enough that nothing else is required to have that food????? My dear lecturers used to answer you cannot get five star food in a hostel, but my dear lecturer never realised that I was simply asking for a food which could be eaten by one and all and nothing more than that.
Did any single lecturer put in their contribution in making things better in the hostel, no never. I from my side had brought about all the changes that I could from my side inspite of being a lone single person in the form of student. I made it sure that ragging was eradicated from my hostel through my behaviour which even Mrs Matharani Mathias couldn't achieve. I had made many many such changes without the help and support of a single lecturer. But what was the contribution of these lecturers to my cause????? There are no ropes to dry our colthes I made the arrangement for the same using whatever resources I had in my hands. In the end all that I got for answer was in the form of a certificate which I have framed and kept it at home. There are solutions for all ptoblems only if there is a intent to solve it. Even Impossible says i m possible. I hope I have made myself clear to one and all.

Read more attentively, I was always told in the college that 1 single man or woman can not change the system, but my question to those ppl were mahatma Gandhi, Carl marx, subash chandar bose, abraham lincoln, swami Vivekananda, mahatma phule, were they not but a lone crusader for their cause but look at their legacy even after so many years after their death their teachings and principles are still being followed by all. I believe the motto should not be "each one for himself" but instead "it should be one for all and all for one" " together we can and together we will". There are no institutions or families which do not go through UPS and downs but mind it only those survive who have a intent to be united at all cost no matter what their personal differences are. There should be an intent with regards to the same. My suggestion to the top notch management of the college especially the ones at nitte ie to Mr Vinaya Hegde please appoint a person who can look into the daily affairs of the college as well as the hostel. A person who is not a lecturer cause a lecturers job is to teach and not to manage. It's the managers job to do the management work be it the college or the hostel. Cut off the powers of these ppl make each one responsible for their actions then see how things change. No need to change any of the lecturers be it the principal or the vice principal. If at all there is something to changed then it is the style of management and nothing else. I have never been in agreement with the ideas of principal or vice principal but mind it I vouch for them that they are good at what they are doing ie teaching but certainly not management. Man power management is just beyond their reach and hold way way beyond. How can u except a principal to manage the college we hen he doesn't know how to manage his own anger and how can u expect a vice principal to manage who doesn't know to manage her own personal ambitions?????

My question who are telling that hourable and most respectable of all Matharani Mathias maam has to come back for the college to come back on top. I don't mean to disrespect her or nyone else for that matter, but my question is how long can Matharani ma'am look after this college??? There will be a point of time when we need to look beyond her cause at some point of time she, even if she wants to won't be able to be a part of this institution forever. Doesn't she have a time limit what after that???? My belief is that there should be such a system in place cause of which no matter how important or powerful or knowledgeable the person is, his or her quitting or resigning should never be a matter of concern. The institution should keep on running smoothly even if one or all of the existing staff quit due to whatever reasons. I believe only those institutions survive which develop a system so strong that it is not dependable on any one person whose absence will cause any problems whatsoever in the functioning of a institution. Why not make a institution so strong which will be able to survive forever without mattering who stays & who leaves. Take examples of the oberoi the tatas the ambanis has it affected their business due to the absence of its founders???? I still believe only one thing my college can & will bounce back if & only if there is a collective effort from both the sides ie not only the management but also the students. My only message to ppl in nitte as well as sarosh put personal ambitions and enimities aside for a while & unite yourself and work towards the upliftment of this college or be ready to face the consequences of your actions and see the closure of this college. To the lecturers politics is required but only the right kind of politics. Survival politics is justified but only if it is not causing problems to the students. Mind it. Don't forget there is a God watching from upstairs, what you sow so shall you reap. What goes around comes around.

One question to all the students and their parents, many hold the current lecturers the principal and vice principal to be responsible for the current mess, but who has the guts to ask the same very question to the topmost management. Put these things in front of the MD and make him answerable put these things infront of the chairman of nitte and make him answerable. Just by giving name to college is not sufficient enough. Looking into the problems of the lecturers and the students is also their duty. A college is meant to be established for providing education and not a means to mint money. I agree money is required but there are ways and means to achieve it. Why is wghsa so far ahead today. What does our college lack in terms of competing with wghsa??? The people at the helm have all the power and ability to do all that they can inorder to make our college better than wgsha. But alas there is no intent from anyone with regards to this. The personal ambition of lecturers has ruined this college. Being a lecturer is a very very honourable position, I believe the duty of a lecturer is not to fulfill his personal ambitions but instead see to it that the students personal ambition is being fulfilled. In this college the lecturers were hell bent on going one up on each other due to which the students suffered. Their personal ambitions is what has resulted in this. But again I would like to say each of them are honest and sincere people who have somewhere down the line have failed to understand that it's not about showing your knowledge and talents to others but instead it is a profession to enhance the talent and knowledge of the students. If the lecturers had to showcase their knowledge and talents the industry is was and forever will be open for them, show it over there. But as far as the students are concerned the college is a place for show casing and enhancing their knowledge and skills and not the lecturers.

In continuation to my previous comment I would like to add that when an institution fails the responsibility does not fall squarely on one person cause I believe one person is not capable of doing it. It is always an collective effort. My question to people who are commenting what have you ppl done to save this college from destruction. If each one of us that is the past and the existing student community as well as the teaching and non teaching staff do their job properly than this college wouldn't have been in the state that it is at present. How many students has each one of the present or the past student community referred this college to others, if each one had repayed our debt to our alma mater than it would have been in this sorry and pathetic state. As far as the top notch ppl r concerned I don't think even they are wrong in expecting returns from investment made by them. They have all the right to expect it, but there is a limit to it and a proper way to which this.
My question to each person who has been a part of this college is there any single soul who does not have a fond memory of this college which he has treasured in his heart forever. Also remember each one of these lecturers are the people responsible for us to reach the position we have in our lives. I know for sure how each one of these lecturers help the students even if it means going way beyond their reach. If it weren't for these kind hearted souls more than half would never have been able to clear without a single backlog in all four years. People who are talking trash about be it the principal or the vice principal or any other particular person in college forget that these very ppl have helped so many students without even letting them know about it. Let me make one point clear no one particular person is to be blamed for the present situation its a collective failure.

First of let me make it clear, if there is any one person or student in particular who suffered the most in that college then it is undoubtedly me, but still mark my words when I say this no single person is to be held responsible for it. I suffered the most in that hostel each one of the staff as well as my classmates know about it, but still I have only one thing to say it is a collective failure. And I hold each person in the college as responsible for the present state of this college, right from the teaching to the non teaching staff, as well as the entire student community. Why blame the principal or the Vice Principal in particular or others for internal politics for that matter. Let me ask you one question tell of one institution where there is no politics, but mind you it is a must and I term it "survival politics" which each one has to play in order to protect their rights and interests there is nothing wrong in it. Each one who is part of this industry would know what exactly am talking about. Is there a person alive on this planet who has not ever played politics??
The simply solution to the problems of this college is that each one needs to do their job honestly and sincerely. If each one who has been a part or is privileged enough to be still a part of this institution do their job properly I feel nothing wrong in saying that our college can be equal to WGSHA if not better than them, but that will happen only if each one do their job responsibly. Being a student I know the wrongs done by both the sides so let that topic be aside. The staff especially the teaching staff are not be blamed because they are not the sole one responsible for decision making there are people above them. Be assured when I say this if it were in the capacity of these people than they would have offered 5star facilities to all the students, but the problem is that they but just people from middle class section of the society with families to look after.

The past few days is college have been very entertaining.we the students had some simple question which needed proper answers not some lame cooked up story.when I joined college there were 13 lecturers but now we have only 6 now that is a serious problem. Which led the new time table which has one teacher taking more than 1 subject.sarosh is the best place to study or was but now it does not feel like that they forgot this college is a skill oriented college not academic oriented I am not telling dont teach but put in more activities.the bus facility which provides free to all is being charged in our college when we asked Mr Merwin why 1500 is collected, because when we joined the college it was told in the prospects that transportation is free he asked us to go and ask the principal who signed my admission form, she has resigned. He is a staff in the college who is being paid from the fees we pay. He must atleast give proper reply. When we meet these people after some years we must be able to greet them with a warm hand shake not a cold fist... Wifi or no wifi we dont care give us quality education and treat us with respect and not sarcasm. This college is getting publicity for all the wrong reasons not because of the students but because of the miss management. Face the problem, solve it and move on. We love this college

we the final years personally do not blame the college or the faculty for these problems. this is clearly something to do with the management putting pressure to take such hapzard descisons. college timings have never been a problem because we have spent the last few years with same timings. but I must say that over the past years the quality of everything has been compromised on. from under staffing to facilities and ingrediants provided by the college, which is not justified after paying 70000 fees. the management must be held responsible and the appropriate action must be taken to rectify the problem.. its not about being rebels ,it is about the quality of education provided especially to a hotel management student. cause the quality and only quality matters to mould us into right and faithful citizens. we must learn from such incidents and the reason I think this protest has become a big issue cause the students feel cheated.@mervin pias. u can justify saying college timings are not mentioned in the prospectus. lets see wat is mentioned.. the free bus facilities and wifi campus have clearly been mentioned but still not provided can that be justified. our college is understaffed can that be explained. so wat we think is the management must take into consideration and take quick and appropriate action.

I wonder whether SIHA is loosing her pride. When i was studying it was one of the best college ever. The hostel facilities at kottara chowki was good.I think this is the first time SIHA is encountering such an issue.Ms Matharani Mathias was the best principal ever.. And to the current management you are getting paid by the students , so have the responsibility to listen to the student issues and resolve it other than denying it. And if the students are charged for the the facilities then it has to be provided. And to the students protest for the needs their no point of protesting for luxury( WIFI). And one sad thing that have noticed was people who never studied or never know about the college are sharing the post in FB. As Dewey said " Education is not a preparation for life , education is life itself"....Humbly requesting to the management to provide quality education and facilities rather than spoiling the image of the college. I STILL LOVE MY (OLD) COLLEGE.. And i am glad that i have studied under the most efficient Principal( Ms Mathias) and most lovable and efficient lecturers ( Ms Veda , Ms Sally, Ms Ruksana, Mr srikantan, Mr Sandeep, Ms Rajeswary, Ms Indira) and all others...

Sad to read this news about SIHA. Sarosh is the best Hotel Mgt college in Mangalore after Manipal. I can say this because I was here as a student for 4 years and then as a Staff for 4 years. The facilities inside the college are really good. Hostel used to be happy home for all guess as time passed hostel changed and condition worsened.
Mr. Merwin Pais nothing to do with this. I guess the old and outdated ideas of Management and inner politics of staff are the reasons for this outburst of students.
Hope management will come up with innovative ideas and Sarosh will bounce back to its old glory.
As far as I know timings are followed from long back in same manner 9-5. Wi-Fi available at Computer lab, library and Cafeteria. All labs are having the best facilities.
    Happy tomorrow for Sarosh.

Chef has no clue about cooking . 2) The ambience of the kitchen (QTK) is pathetic. 3) There is no hygine followed Hostel is at its worse. A dumpyard is better than that hostel 4)Merwyn Pais , firstly stop collecting money from the students in the name of fine . Instead repair the hostel nd provide facilities to the students with the funds that you've collected over the years (p.s My batch itself has paid the amount with which you can build 5 new hostels ) Concluding , the management is awful . many are participated in this strike becz of some 2nd year students force. from institution No one told that timing is 9 to 3.30 during the admission time and we can only request. No one have right to frce to change college timings. Even final year and 3rd year and maximum other class students also dont have prblm wth timing. Bcz of some stdnts all are involved and protesting. In any college wifi not provided for mobile for personal use or downloading still they are providing us during break period. We came to study. Not to use internet in class rooms. I never seen lecturera like this who supporting us for every problem and friendly with us. When we do mistake and they will give punishment we should accept it. In hostel one room have seapage means not like every room is like that only. Its not college building. They have taken it for rent and recently taken. So they are not aware of seapage things. When they got complaint they tried to solve it. It takes time because building owner has to come and repair it. Managrment is trying to solve it. They never promised every gym items im the college. Minimum items is there. That is more than enough. Hostel food is normal mangalore food and that is good. you cant expect home food in the hostel. Everyone have diferent taste and also they are from different places. Kitchen is not at all bad. Dosa/chapathi thava is black mns not like its bad, that is old and using daily so it is black. And normaly it will be black only. And main thing is ants r common in sugar. they are not putting poison or bad things in it. who are not attending class and who have bad habbits and got punishment those people created this problem using innocent people. please dont create this type of nonsence. bcz of you people, students who want to study they also getting trouble. u also study and leave others to study. we studied 3 years here and we dont hv any problem. we are staying in hostel frm 3 years and we are happy here. we dont want to trouble institution or lecturer.

hotel management ops: look at the kitchen. What will these students learn and become hotel staff. These colleges should be allowed to continued. Unacceptable rooms. Students should visit the facility before register to any college. WIFI not a major issue to protest, others are major concerns.

OMG!look at the condition of the kitchen, bedrooms! In dakshina kannada there are many professional colleges just doing the business, getting students from other districts, states through the agents with false promises and filling the numbers for name sake and making them to suffer.I Really appreciate the students move, fight until you get justice, you guys paid the money so there should be value for the money. WELL DONE STUDENTS.
