CBSE’s new dress code: Kerala nun denied from giving AIPMT with veil, cross

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 25 (Agencies) : A Keralite nun was today denied permission to take the the All India Pre Medical Entrance Test (AIPMT) here after she refused to remove her veil and Holy cross as required under the CBSE’s new dress code.

Sister Saiba, who was to take the test at the Jawahar central school here this morning, said she sought permission to write the examination with her veil and cross.

However, the school Principal told her about the guidelines issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
She then requested for a separate room to write the examination without the veil and cross, but it was not accepted by the school authorities, she told mediapersons.

“I requested that I may be given a separate room where I will remove the veil and cross and write the test, but that was not allowed,” she said.

The Principal told her that she was also a Christian and understood her plight, but as per CBSE guidelines, veil and Holy cross cannot be permitted inside the examination hall.

Many students were seen removing head scarfs, ear ringsand all other articles banned before entering the hall at various examination centres in the state. They were allowed inside only after body frisking.

The Supreme Court had yesterday refused to entertain plea of an Islamic organisation that Muslim girl applicants be allowed to wear ‘hijab’ (scarf), a customary religious dress, while appearing for the AIPMT.

“Faith is something different from wearing some kind of cloth,” a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu stated, adding the AIPMT was being held again at its direction and some “reasonable restrictions” were needed.

Kerala High Court had earlier granted conditional permission to two Muslim girls to appear for the test wearing hijab.
In the backdrop of large scale irregularities in the AIPMT held in May this year, the apex court had directed CBSE to conduct a second test following which CBSE imposed a strict dress code, banning jeweleries, hair pins, head scarf or veils, shoes, watches and all electronic devices.

Reacting to the incident, Syro Malabar Church spokesperson Father Paul Thelekkat, said it was “unfortunate” that the nun was not permitted to write the test.

“The Catholic church does not consider veil as the most important religious symbol of the Catholic faith. At the same time, we do not subscribe to the view of the Supreme court Chief Justice that 3-4 hours without veil does not make any difference. It does make and it is up to the citizen to take the decision”, he said here.

When Catholic monks roam around the town wearing common man's dress (pant and shirt), what harm is there if a nun sits for an examination without veil and cross for a few hours? After all dress code is not part of Christianity. Attire for the clergy was adopted by tradition. Nevertheless, Christians have been exhorted to dress modestly.

The reason for her not being allowed to write is because of the veil and the cross, and apparently MOST people are missing the point.

The nun is NOT wearing a veil just see her picture her face is uncovered so the reason for stopping her from writing her exam is wrong, period.

    To all the religious personnel:
Please heed to the rules and regulations of the CBSE as it is nondiscriminatory. You can adorn your dresscode outside the exam hall.
It is very rare event in India were rules are enforced and no one is above the law. I see this as a very positive development.

Our individual religions are private- let us not insist on wearing our religious garments. If lay christian people can write the exam- religious people can wear them.

Most of us want to live in comfort where we can appease both Government and God. But Christ and the world do not mix. The day will come when the enemies of Christ will openly oppress Christians.

I hope you understand that man's laws keep changing, while God's laws don't. Changing laws to persecute Christians isn't new. Should we say "just honour the law of the land" then? At what point will you say this is wrong?

Remember the martyrs too could have said "just honour the law of the land", but they didn't. For e.g. the early Roman Martyrs could have honoured the law of the land, but they chose not to abandon Christ, lest they be found wanting. Prophet Daniel did not recant his faith or did he?

Watch and Pray as Our Lord advised.

What is the reason for dress code for AIPMT exam? It is a clear violation of freedom of religion asking students to remove their religious outfit.

If a religion requires one to walk naked (like some religious Monks) their religious right should take precedence over AIPMT rules and such people should be accommodated with separate room for taking exam.

People with turban and hijabs are allowed to pass through the security at the airports worldwide. What is so big deal about the AIPMT exams. All they have to make sure that the ion process is corruption free.

One of the terrible ailments of the many societies, especially Indian, is that people use religion to prop themselves up on some imaginary pedestal.

To complete the act, they robe themselves in special garments, to set themselves apart from the rest of the common folks.

That is a real tragedy, as most religions actually preach a kind of social egalitarianism, and regard vanity as sin.

Pope Francis seems to understand the social egalitarianism and vanity very well when he tells people to call him Francis.

But Indian priests and nuns, vain as they are, are not prepared to live like common people.

By the way, Jesus wore the clothes of the common people of his time.

So, for a Catholic priest or nun to claim that their habits/cassocks are part of their religion is a huge fallacy. Either they are not aware of the fundamentals of their religion, or their vanity has blinded them.

Dress code was never part of the New Testament or the Acts of the Apostles. It crept in later to support the vanity of some.

Dress code was already there during the time of the Apostles. Anyone who followed Christianity would suffer persecution during the time of the Apostles right till this day. It is only fools who believe that appeasing local governments will win them reprieve and acclaim. False humility by appeasing social egalitarianism and being "Yes Men" is not part of our faith. Read the Bible and the teachings of the Church Fathers. Man cannot serve God and Mammon. Pick wisely.

"She refused to remove her veil and Holy cross".

Firstly the nun in the picture is NOT wearing a veil. A veil is worn down to cover the face, but as we all see in the picture her face is clearly exposed and so she is not wearing the veil. Wearing of the veils in an exam is not acceptable as it conceals identity and hence in an exam the invigilator has the right to ask that the veil be removed and face be seen at all times. While I agree we MUST follow rules, rules should be interpreted correctly, and should not to be confused by using the wrong verbiage.

What a Nun wears is called a Coif. The coif is a garment to cover her head, and at times it could also cover her cheeks and neck. It is sometimes covered by a thin layer of black crape. In the picture she is only earing a coif or head covering. The coif is equivalent to what Muslim woman call Hijab (not Nikab which is a veil that covers her face), and Sikh woman call a Dastaar. To the best of my knowledge NO Muslim has ever been asked to take off their Hijab (head scarf) or a Sikh woman asked to take out her Dastaar (head scarf).

Display of religious symbols is also unacceptable – but then Sikhs openly wear the Turban and even carry a Kirpan which are clear outward signs of religion. However, in the interest of peace and in going forward she could ear a cross under her garments as many Christians do and since it is no more visible to the eye, I think that should suffice and she should be able to write her exams.

How does a Cross or headscarf which falls at the nape of the neck help a student to copy in any way?

Do they not depute Supervisors in the Examination Hall to discourage coying?

We all know that there has been a rampant copying and unfair means in the exams and the present system is one of them to avoid such misdeeds. She is obeying God first and Man later. The Church along with its Priests have forgotten who comes first and have led the laity astray. Do not be fooled.

Your comment on Jesus abandoning is wrong. You never put God to the test, have you forgotten this commandment? Because if you have, then you will not be able to face the enemies of Christ who will come tomorrow and ask you bow to another God.

Many people abandoned their faith in times of persecution, only a few remained. The time of persecution is knocking on the door once again. God looks for the few, not the many who will give up when they are put to the test.

"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Matthew 26:41)

Good and welcome decision..anything you ware, your customs, religion everything, all out of the gate of school/collage. Inside all are equal and same. Do not represent your religion inside the school / collage.

..there is some thing called COMMONSENSE..and the said Principal lacks it..how a chain or cross will effect conducting exam!!..veil,full veil, scarf may be used for copying, since it has happened many time so this time there is re-exam with strict rules..Exam Board dont want to repeat the earlier mistake..But removing cross, chain, bangle will not serve the purpose..But this principal arrogant or she wants to create controversy..Rules are there for larger good of the students future..you cant attend exam draping safron cloth all over body and with a KAMANDAL in you hand..

She felt she had to stand for identity which she could not separate from herself as an essence of her being. It is debatable whether a nun has to remove the veil and cross which is accepted as part of her very own way of life. If at all the law is just, then she has lost nothing and she has only remained true to her conscience. If the law is unjust, a great injustice has been done to her. Any way, when God closes one door, he opens another window

Rev. Father, with due respect, we do not stand for our identity, we stand for our faith. Why say the Nicene Creed if we don't believe in it and follow it? Sunday Catholicism isn't what God seeks. God seeks men and women of faith!

"It does make and it is up to the citizen to take the decision”. Yes, the decision shall be to appear for the examination or not. I do think religious freedom is not absolute and shall not be allowed to override personal freedom. Actually, veil that conceal identity of the person should be banned at public places. Progressive countries like France is a pioneer in this regard and UK will follow soon. My right to know who is sitting next to me and with whom I am travelling in a public place, the least to the extent of ensuring my safety and protection, is paramount and shall be respected by others in a civilized society.

    Dear Mr Sethu,

You need to understand that religious custom is a serious matter. Be it for a Hindu, Christian or Muslim. One cannot make a bizarre statement to ban veil just because it conceals ones identity. National Security is of course a matter of concern. But do you deal with it by hurting the religious sentiments? I might agree or disagree with the CBSE's new dress code, but I strongly condemn your remarks on one's religious choice.

Just follow the compliance, dont make it communal please. Rule is a Rule.

As there is an issue CBSE should pass some amendments in future to accommodate all walk of life citizens as India is a diversified country without politicizing the issue. But identity and face should be clearly visible to match with the ID to avoid scams.

    God Bless our beautiful country.

The CBSE must follow the Supreme Court ruling which is clear and correct. Even in Canada you cannot get a passport or citizenship unless your face is fully visible and here there is no question of hiding anything as in an exam hall where cheating takes place in all sorts of ways. The Padre who disagrees with the SC decision is apparently narrow minded when it comes to his religion.

The stipulated rules should never be relaxed or ignored. That way there will be more discipline. In todays times of advanced technology there are hundreds of ways for unfair means to clear exams. If the rules are ignored for a few, it will be unfair to those students who abide by the rules during examination.
In any competitive examination there should be a healthy competition and no unfair means should be used.

Being a Christian myself, i'm of the opinion that any Religious customs should be confined to your own territory and not t be exhibited in public in this modern age. This should be applied to all religions when it comes to Educational Institutions and places where people from all religions congregate.
