Udupi, Jul 24: Shops and business establishments at Padubidri here downed their shutters on Friday July 24 in protest against the state government's decision to widen the national highway, which would result in the demolition of several structures.

After lot of dilly-dallying, the government has finally arrived at a decision to widen national highway 66 at its present location that passes through Padubidri town. The proposal to build a bypass that was in limbo for a long time, has been dropped. The government has already served 3A notice, duly announcing its decision to widen the present highway that plows through Padubidri town.

Opposing the decision of the government, which will result in demolition of a number of houses, shops, and business establishments in the town, Committee of National Highway Probable Distressed Persons decided to observe Padubidri bandh from 6 am to 6 pm on July 24.

The committee has alleged that the bypass road which had been earlier proposed by it and cleared by the government in the past had been done away with because of political considerations. It feels that because of this decision, a number of commercial complexes, community halls, and centres of worship will get demolished.

The committee has urged the government or revert to the earlier plan of building bypass road to the east of the town at the area already identified.

On Friday, most of the shops and hotels were closed in support of the bandh. However, the auto rickshaw drivers did not join in, and were seen plying on the road. The bandh mainly affected the central part of the town while most other parts were normal.

A protest march was also held, led by the committee, urging the government to withdraw the 3A notice. The protestors later submitted a memorandum to the tahsildar in this regard.

Highway authority marked 150 feet. And there is margin stipulated feet to build the buildings, unauthorized construction done at that period nobody objected. Considering this Padubedri most of the buildings are illegal. So this is case for demolition. Or otherwise built overbridge it will help/solve all the problems, like Surathkal, and acquire all the Govt. Lands.....Anyhow Highway authority should take fast decision/construction to help few developments hindered for a long time. can we touch heart and tell our real symphony for agitation.

No doubt, if properly dug into most of these road touching constructions could come out as illegal, done when the rules were not being implemented strictly!!

Same situation in Bantwal town where the houses/shops are cut to cut with the roads!! Today it has been bypassed and BC Road has become the hub of most activity!! If these roadside property owners are not relenting a bypass should be created so that infrastructure progress is not delayed!! Jai Hind!

This golden opportunity to get rid of corrupt hotels should not be lost. Padubidri highway should be widened at the same place and all the illegal buildings should be demolished so that people can walk peacefully on the roads which have been polluted by the dirty water flowing out of hotels built on occupied government land. This is the victory for people's power against money power of some individuals.

If public does not give place then from where road should go . Or leave them AS IS provide widened bridge and move bus stop to 5-6 kms away Finished... UPCL these people not raised voice and people are suffering from respiratory diseases due to fly ash & pollution..

In 1965 highway authority marked 150 feet. And there is margin 20 feet to build the buildings, Considering this Paduberi most of the buildings are illegal. So this is case for demolition. Let country develop. Padubedri's these buildings owners should see China's Shanghai first. Because of India's bad policies India lagging infrastructure Development. Good some change is coming from policy front.

Sadly these protesters themselves have caused this mess (knowingly) in the first place, with the help of local politicians etc., and would never never give up even for the sake of development of the area.

If we give in to such demands elsewhere, we will never see progress even after 1000 years.

Look, it takes some much time to build a city. I always warn developments are most welcome but not at the cost of present. Don't trouble a Parents life just because children are going to enjoy. Today matters a most.

Authorities should first identify the 40 meters of land acquired during 1970's and demolish all illegal constructions in this section. Then acquire only 10 meters on either side.

this is the nonsense of earlier congress governments and Panchayats etc. How can one give permission to construct hotels and shops, when you know this stretch of the road is highway? ..it is clearly marked that, on both sides of each road, you should leave out so much of land, for expansion of roads!... why di they let it happen? .. I see on one side there is enough land, bot the other side, is too congested. only solution is elevated cantilever type of road strtched way above these buildings..but the cost will go scyrocketing and also, it will shift the bustands etc to other locatio, which is of no use.beyond that, i dont see any location, which can make this as bypass... what is the solution padubidri folks can come up with? and without Land acquistion bill is it even possible to acquire alternate land...

While any individual feels anxious when he is dislodged from his place inhabited since ages, but then for development to take place one has to sacrifice for the overall benefit of the society and the future generations!!

It is an irony public is always complaining of lack of infra like nonavailability of footpaths and other infra facilities but at the same time not agreeing to forego an inch of their property!!

The compensation rates for acquisition of land has been increased considerably if I am not mistaken!!

Moreover, this acquisition is not for setting up a polluting industry or for a pvt. enterprise in which case such an agitation would have been justified!!

Resisting this will only delay the project, but ultimately it is going to happen when the authorities have already firmly decided on it!! Jai Hind!!

Govt. compensation value doesn’t give any relief those who loose their house well and farmlands. If govt. would able to rehabilitates them with alternative places in surround locality and pays real compensation for the loses then what government does can be said right

Padubidri is developed very well in recent time. Demolishing the business premises, shops/worship places is not solution, instead of make a fly over same like surathkal or underpass road . All problems will be solved.

We have witnessed construction of a beautiful road from Padubidri to Karkala. The contraction activities got delayed by one year due to objection from 5 families demanding high compensation. All of them belong to Development Party. Development party MLA Mr. xxx xxx was supporting their demand with a CUT for him. Finally, they lost their battle for high compensation and road construction was finished with police supervision. Here also same situation. Government should have planned shifting of shops to a new location or a new bus stand could have constructed nearby areas.

    Dear Jenna, Belman/Karla

During December 2014, I have driven on this beautiful road from Padubidri to Belman. I felt at that time that I am driving between
Dubai-Abu dhabi Highway. If Padubidri-Karkala road was widen & built nicely why we can't give a nice face lift & to widen this important highway Padubidri bus stop area road. As this main bus stop road is not at all a very
narrow road. If there is a will, there is a way.

widening the highway is a necessity But the govt should find alternatives if ot affects the business of local people by destroying their shops and business establishments May be an alternate route for the highway without destroying the business establishments Anything is possible in modern day world with technology Highway can be widened with less harm to the loacl peoplemliving in Padubidri I am sur ethe government will do it
