Puttur: First phase of work done, Shiradi Ghat expected to reopen on Aug 1

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (SP/CLP)

Puttur, Jul 23: The first phase of work on Shiradi Ghat has been completed, with only the finishing work that is in progress now remaining. It is learnt that this road will be open for light vehicles from August 1 onward, whereas heavy vehicles will be allowed to ply from August 15.

At present, the task of filling the roadsides with a mixture of sand and concrete is going on to close the difference of height between the concrete road and sides.

There is however, apprehension about the second phase of the work, as tender process for the remaining 13 km road development is yet to be finalized. Though GVR company from Hyderabad has bagged the contract, the central finance ministry is yet to give the green signal. Also, the road may be closed again during the second phase of work.

The contractors had been originally given 18 months time to complete road works here, but they were pressurized to finish it in six months, taking into consideration the problems faced by people from various districts who are heavily dependent on this road. The contractors got possession of the road in January instead of November first week last year, thus delaying the work further. However, they have finished work in seven months, in spite of the fact that they came across a number of obstacles and challenges in between like heavy rain during April.

Speaking to daijiworld, contractor Inayath said, "The work was handed over to us 6 months ago and we have completed the first phase. Now curing process is going, August first week the road will be opened for light vehicles and about 10 days after that, for heavy vehicles. Earlier the road was 7 metres wide, now it is 8.5 metres.

"We have used all the necessary machinery, imported from Germany. If it had been manual work, it would have taken two years. Twelve escalators, three concrete mixers, 50 tippers and 350 labourers were involved in this work," he said.

"The tender for the second phase of work is not yet finalized. The work on the remaining stretch will be easier," he added.

The contractors disclose that they had to withstand protests, continued movement of vehicles claiming to be owned by locals, vehicles of people in powerful positions, and those who sneak in by luring the workers. Problems of wild animals, shortage of workers who are prepared to do night shift, also posed challenges. There had been some attacks on security personnel, workers etc. The site had steady stream of visitors in the form of officials, politicians, experts, social activists etc.

R K Jain, member of Indian Road Congress, which has prepared a documentary on the works here, and Prof P B Pandey of Kharagpur Indian Institute of Technology have certified about the quality of works here. The contractors say that high quality has maintained in laying this road, geo textile sheets have been laid for the entire stretch, thus doing away with the risk of water percolating down the ghat section damaging the road.

PWD and district in-charge minister are expected to visit Shiradi on July 26, after which a decision about allowing vehicles to move on this stretch will be announced. Nataraj, national highway department executive engineer, said that heavy vehicles will be allowed after a gap of about two weeks since light vehicles begin to use this road.

Hope proper terms and conditions have been laid while awarding this contract. Using proper technicality and quality materials with lab tested certification made mandatory while awarding this contract. Publish the full details of the contractor so that no one can disown the responsibility in case of poor work.

Indeed it is good news - GOOD NEWS for all motorists. Shiradi Ghats is a link between Dakshina Kanada and a few others places. The scenic beauty of the area can indeed by enjoyed by all traveling public. Hope the finished road will remain in good condition for a period of at least five years.

It is unfortunate the the remaining part of the road is yet to be completed which again hamper smooth movement of traffic.

This road is far from world class road. Look at the express ways in western countries. There are barricades to prevent the animals to cross the roads, animal crossing holes, sideways are barricaded and secured, dividing lanes with reflectors for driving in the night, Oasis for refreshments/resting..etc.

It looks like they have just poured the concrete and said it is done.

BTW, why these politicians have to visit/inspect the work? What do they know about the Engineering?

    @ Lawrance,

You can only hear words like "world class", "high tech" in every bhashans of our useless coastal MPs, MLAs, ministers for cheap publicity who lack basic common sense, patriotism and honesty.

They are only interested in laying foundation stones, and or inauguration ceremonies at public expense.

In the world of "Infrastructure" the highways and skyways stand out as "Numero Uno" in the list of priorities. The broad roadways connect our Cities, Towns and Villages and expand our Industry and Economy. Roads create a link between Societies and Communities by using best of transport facilities with a view to assist people to move from place to place and exchange not only their friendship but also expand their business by being able to move freely and comfortably.

Roadways are therefore essential for human progress and prosperity. Good roads cost money, but once good roads are built and maintained, then for years and years we do not have to worry. The roads also generate taxes and that is relevant to all the new improvements that are necessary to cope with increased traffic that generates new incomes to the treasury.

Good roadways can also provide suitable Bill Boards that can advertise new products and new banners that will the travelling public on Hotels, Motels, Restaurants and even Gas Stations. All these are new avenues of earning money for the Department of Transport to generate new ideas of travel comforts to the public. Roads are therefore contributing to the lifeline of our daily existence.

We sincerely hope therefore that the newly established good road at Shiradi Ghats will open the eyes of all our responsible leaders to make sure that these good roads are not a "one time deal" but a process of continuous upgrades of progress in all that we pursue in our villages, towns and cities.

It is only nice for our leaders to utilize the mode of helicopters or charter flights for their travel, but as they travel they should also glimpse at our roadways and make sure that the traffic moves smoothly and steadily and there is every comfort for our travelling public who are the backbones of our tax paying society.

Good roads is also one way to educate all of us while we move forward with progress and prosperity. "Dhanyawadh".

Always some criticism over the PWD works. Some encouragement should be shown on the people who works in such a remote place. When the Indian road congress certifying the quality of work we should rely on it. I think All the stretch of the Shiradi ghat road should have been taken at once. I cannot agree with view that only small vehicles should use it. When MRPL has a pipeline facility, transportation of gas through bullet tanker can be avoided.

SHOULD BAN ENTRY TO LORRIES TANKERS AND BUSES TO ENTER SHIRAADI GHAAT.

THEN THERE WON'T BE ROAD DAMAGES.

THE WAY THE BUS DRIVES SO FAST IT'S REALLY VERY DANGEROUS FOR SMALLER VEHICLES. THEY THINK THEY OWN THE ROAD AS IF THEY ARE RACING ON FORMULA 1 TRACK.
