Madikeri, Jul 20: A student who was returning home with a relative who was riding a motor bike, got killed after the motor bike hit an electric pole. The victim, identified as Nazeer (17), son of Razack and Ayesha couple from Kottamudi village, was a tenth standard student studying in a school at Hodavada in the districts.
Spirited Nazeer had celebrated Ramzan with relatives and friends. He had visited Padiyani village with his relative, Moidu Kunhi, and was returning in the evening. After Moidu lost control of the motor bike he was riding, it hit an electric pole near Nelaji Junction. Nazeer, who was seated on the pillion, suffered serious injuries. Moidu escaped with minor injuries.
Nazeer was taken to Napoklu government hospital immediately. As doctors were not available there, he had to be taken to the district hospital at Madikeri, but by then the boy had passed away.
Villagers, expressing resentment at the absence of doctors at Napoklu hospital and claiming that delay in treatment of boy had caused his death, held protest. They also demanded suitable compensation to the boy's family, who have suffered because of negligence of health department. They warned of intensifying the agitation if a permanent doctor is not posted to Napoklu hospital within the next three days.
When slogans were raised against health minister, U T Khader, and local MLA, K G Bopaiah, verbal frictions took place between BJP and Congress activists. Napoklu gram panchayat president, Ismail, vice president, Saba Timmaiah, and members visited the spot, held discussions with protesters, and promised them of taking steps to set right things.
Napoklu station house officer, Raghu, along with other personnel, visited the accident spot.
