Karkala, Jul 18: Personnel of the rural police station here arrested two persons, identified as Muhammed Saheb (60) and Saudat alias Sahil (20), residing near Tellar mosque in Durg village here on Friday July 17. They have been accused of slaughtering cattle at their home and selling beef.

It is said that since the beginning of the month of Ramzan, Muhammed Saheb has been engaged in preparing beef at home and selling it. As per information collected by the police, the cattle were slaughtered during nights, and beef was sold during the day. Some locals, who were observing these happenings, had entered Saheb's house some days back and searched for signs of beef trade. After finding that some cattle pelts were stored in the shed, they had complained to rural police station.

Rural station police sub-inspector, Mahadeva Shetty, led a team of officials to the spot. The house owner reportedly claimed that he had collected these pelts from others. The policemen, who conducted further search, found remnants of cadavers, skeletal remains etc which were dumped in a deserted well in the backyard of the house. During further interrogation, the family members confessed to be engaged in preparing beef and selling it at home.

A total of 25 cattle pelts were found from the house. A number of bones and teeth of cattle were also found from a canal located backside of this house. The policemen also took into possession a bullock that had been brought for slaughtering.

It is gathered that the pelts have good demand in the making of percussion instruments, but the accused were unable to properly dry them because of rainy season. Saheb, it is said, had also been accused and arrested for getting involved with slaughtering cattle illegally in the past, and faces a number of cases.

Saudat too had been accused of behaving with two minor girl in a lewd manner on June 20 last. He had been arrested, and released after getting a bond of good conduct executed. Now he has been accused of illegally slaughtering cattle.
