Mangaluru, Jul 11: In an effort to boost safety of women in the city, Father Muller Medical College in collaboration with Mangaluru city police on Saturday July 11 conducted an awareness programme on a mobile app for women's safety recently launched by the city police department.
Addressing the gathering, S Murugan, police commissioner of Mangaluru city said, "At the outset I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Father Muller Medical College for conducting this awareness programme. Being in a public position we cannot express many things. But through forums like these we can express our concerns towards the general public. I would not like to rank it or say it is the best one, but I would say it is working well.
"Much of the information necessary to the general public is available without the need for visiting the police station. Not only women but children also can use this app to give their exact location to the person concerned. I call upon each and everyone to give a try and download this app," he urged.
Edison Ryan, senior manager of Diya Systems said, "Commissioner of Mangaluru city police wanted to give people what they needed rather than what they wanted, as wants can be many but essential needs are covered in this app. This app has classifications like personal safety, where once details are entered the app gets activated. In case of distress shaking the phone 5 times will send a message along with location details to the person concerned (emergency contact). FIR status on a complaint can also be known. There is also daily crime report where details of crimes in the city are updated on a daily basis. Also, the app helps in locating the nearest police station, and includes features like traffic rules and live traffic update, and 'call us' feature where complaint can be directly registered with relevant photo."
Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director of FMMC in his presidential address said, "The police department is there to help the general public. With this new app they have become more people-friendly. The benefit of this app can be availed by every one of us. I congratulate the police commissioner and his department on this people-friendly initiative."
Dr Padmaja Uday Kumar welcomed the gathering and Aruna Yediyaal delivered the vote of thanks.
Fr Rudolph Ravi D'sa, administrator of FMMC and GP Alva, dean of FMMC were the other dignitaries on the dais.
