Bantwal, Jul 11: A boy got trapped under the mud when a hillock located in the rear side of a house belonging to Hanif at Kunjattakala in Pudu village in the taluk suffered landslide on the night of Thursday July 9. Heavy, incessant rain caused this landslide.

Hanif's son, Muhammed Arshad (7), a first standard student of the local school, lost his life in this tragedy.

The boy, who was observing Ramadan fast, had broken his fast in the evening and visited the toilet located at the back of the house when the hillock had begun to suffer landslide. The family members, expecting danger, rushed out of the house from the front door. The boy was coming out of the toilet when a huge mound of mud got deposited on him, burying him under its weight completely.

The family, supported by neighbours, dug out the mud and retried the boy from under it. He was immediately taken to a hospital, but had already lost his life. As electric poles also had crashed during this incident, power went off, creating bottlenecks for the early rescue of the trapped boy.

It is believed that water would have got accumulated in the protective wall built of stone to support a recently concreted road on the other side of the house during the last two days. The wall have collapsed under the weight and pressure of water. A few families in the neighbourhood, sensing danger after observing that the hillock was slipping, vacated their houses overnight.

Arshad, fifth of six children of Hanif, was intelligent, and was performing very well at school.

The house of Hanif has exhaustively been damaged due to the landslide, and the tiled roof has been completely demolished. Clothes, utensils and other belongings of the family got trapped in mud and suffered damage. Tahsildar, Purandar Hegde and revenue officials have estimated the loss at three lac rupees. The tahsildar said he has recommended to the government to disburse compensation of four lac rupees to the family, for which is eligible as per rules.

In addition to several local leaders, state health minister, U T Khader, visited the spot on Friday and instructed revenue officials to follow up with the concerned and sanction compensation to the family at the earliest. Apart from promising to extend all possible support on behalf of the government for re-building the destroyed house, he asked officials to immediately conduct temporary repair of the destroyed road.

Zilla panchayat vice president, Satish Kumpala, member, Jayashree, and many visited the family.

While on the subject, there is a site when one is travelling from Bantwal to Moodabidri, near Loretto katta where some greedy people have cleared a near forested pvt. land totalling more than 3 acres and made a vertical excavation of over 60 feet without consulting geologists or structural engineers (this vertical slicing has been done from the top of a hillock bordering properties of 3 persons out of which two are senior citizens, without informing them even)!! Last year during the rains a major portion of the hillock properties beyond the boundary walls of the concerned three affected parties has landslid, this year too there is every chance there will me another major landslide as water seeps in and the cracks widen on the hillock which also has some huge boulders which can get dislodged and race through the slope like a bullet!!

All the idea of the seller and developer was to quickly level the land and make small plots of various sizes and dump it into the hands of gullible buyers and make a quick buck!! Now after the landslide last year both the seller and developer are missing as now they know they will have to build a RCC retainer wall which would cost a fortune before proceeding with the project of making sites!! Complaints to all the local authorities have not yielded any fruits for obvious reasons!! This place if unattended seems to be a big disaster in the making for people staying deep down the hillock in the years to come!!

DW and team should visit such places where gross violoation of forest rules, geological dept. rules, revenue inspector/village accountant accountability due to illegal trespassing of senior citizens properties etc.!! If such cases are allowed to happen and no action taken then God save us, we are waiting for a Uttarakhand like tragedy to happen in the near future akin to the 'Malin' tragedy which wiped out an entire village!!

Those people responsible for such illegal activities should be brought to justice!! Jai Hind!!

One has to travel through the Bantwal-Moodabidri road via SVS College and see the no. of huge landslides that have taken place due to illegal excavation without building barrier walls for making plots and selling to make quick bucks destroying others properties, houses, and putting life and limb to utter risk, but even despite complaining to all the authorities not a single one has taken any action so far, they are waiting for a grim tragedy like Malin landslide to happen, then they will wake up!! Jai Hind!

    RIP innocent soul!!

Nowadays due to rampant deforestation, numerous amounts of quite big landslides are taking place in various places in and around DK!! Residents staying close to hillocks or below ordinary retainer walls built by stone-cement should take precautions and shift to safer places lest a sudden landslide puts their life and property at great risk!!

Never ever think of building a house at a lower level adjacent to a hillock or retainer wall as there is very high risk of such landslides taking place, it may take time, but sure it will happen someday, take precautions!!

People might have forgotten the horrendous 'Malin' landslide of Pune which wiped out the entire village of Malin killing many innocent people in seconds, all because of land excavation for various purposes!!

Nature is very patient, but when man crosses the limit it will revolt with a vengeance and create such havocs like Malin and the recent tragic 'Uttrakhand' disaster!!

    Jai Mangluru!!
