St Aloysius College approved as DDU Kaushal Centre, gets UGC grant of Rs 3.65 cr

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jul 10: St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru has been approved as 'DDU Kaushal Centre' for the year 2015-17 under the 12th Plan Scheme with a grant of Rs 3.65 crore.

As many as 708 higher educational institutions including universities had submitted the proposal for this unique scheme. St Aloysius College is one of only 48 institutions approved by UGC throughout the country.

The innovative scheme provides a great opportunity for those students who have been deprived of higher education for getting skill-based, job-oriented degrees under the title 'B Voc' (Bachelor of Vocation). The uniqueness of the degree is such that it has multiple exit points with job opportunity at each stage. The course has been designed to provide skill education with hands on experience by specifically defining the job role and providing necessary skills for it. The course has 4 stages with 6 semesters.

Further the students also become eligible to pursue postgraduate studies and research like M Voc.

St Aloysius College has been approved to start 3 programmes under B Voc:

1. Retail Management
2. Food Processing and Engineering
3. Pharamaceutical Chemistry

The courses have been identified based on the skill-gap study and the job opportunities in Dakshina Kannada.

The 'Community College' Scheme has already been sanctioned to the college with more than 50 students benefitting under two programmes - Computer animation and multi media and travel and tourism.

Instead of classroom centered formal education, the students under the Kaushal Kendra learn through hands on experience and internships in industry and business houses. Fourteen companies/business firms have signed MoUs with the college for providing their expertise in administering the said courses. Suitable candidates will also have the opportunity of getting absorbed in the business units where they get training. The students will get a stipend during their internship.

Students who have completed their pre-university course may make use of this excellent opportunity. Even those who are already employed will have the chance to continue their studies with the facility of evening sessions.

The general public will be provided information about the courses and contact details. A nominal fee for the course may be charged.

A really happy and proud moment in the history of my Alma Mater, St. Aloysius College. Congratulations to all those who worked hard (not only the members of the management, but also others involved in the process) to make it possible.

May this great institution with a glorious past, continue to shine and may it continue to excel in whatever initiatives it undertakes for the betterment of its students and society as a whole.

Good news for all. For all past students of St. Aloysius like me and the the present generation. Our Alma Mater is approved as DDU Kaushal Centre getting UGC grant of Rs.3.65 crores.

For one hundred and thirty-five years St. Aloysius has stood at the gates of ignorance and battered down the ramparts bringing the the light and joy of education to thousands and thousands of people. The Aloysian glory has spread round the world... people of all denominations sing the aloysian glory.

I am one of those fortunate ones to have received my education at the hands of The Jesuit Fathers. What can we - the past aloysians do? Indeed help the this mighty institution to continue their mission by giving back to them in some measure our time, our resources and help to enable them continue their great work.

Hope the readers and hundreds of others will support our ALMA MATER.
