Mangaluru, Jul 10: With heavy rains lashing the city, several areas have experienced landslips putting many families at risk. Add to that, construction of buildings on high-level and hilly areas has further aggravated the risk.

In one such case, a retaining wall has collapsed at 'Vailankanni Abode', an apartment complex by Vishal Enterprises at Gurunagar in Maryhill here due to heavy downpour.

Though no injuries were reported, the residents in the building are at a high risk with heavy rains expected in the coming days. It is learnt that landslip took place early morning on Friday July 10 due to heavy rainfall.

A resident who did not want to be identified said, "Due to heavy rains the retaining wall has collapsed. The building is in a dangerous position. We have already informed the authority concerned about the present condition of the building, and they have agreed to set it right. Still, we feel the residents are at a risk."

It is also learnt that there are approximately 18 families dwelling in the apartment building. Now this landslip behind the apartment has put them in a fix. Even the children's play area is on the verge of collapsing.

Speaking to daijiworld, manager of Vishal Enterprises, said that the collapse of the retaining wall will not affect anyone. "There is no connection between the retaining wall and the building. It is the retaining wall of the property that has collapsed, and it will not affect the building. Already 40 people are working at the site to clear the debris using machineries. Everything will be set right soon and no one will be affected," he assured.

He also said that water flows into the property through other compounds which led to the collapse of the retaining wall.

This incident Shows when one wants to buy a flat or wants to invest Money in Real Estates, not enough to klick per online and buy first.Instead personally see the environment, neighbours and how and who are the builders etc.inclusive where it is .You get good fresh air when it is highland. But have a look downstairs also. Not that later whole house is sliding downstairs when heavy rains.

Sue a case against those builders who did cheating to their clients. If proper piling might not be built on foundation, possibilities of entire building collapse are sure. Here all concerned authorities, promoters, landowners, structural engineers are surely held liable for indemnities. Jaago graahak jaagoooore.....

it is nice to know that my clients are standing strongly by me and at least appreciate what iam doing for the lower and middle class.the media forgot to show the actual reason for the collapse wherein the water from all corners logged into the compound due to the slopey terrain.at the same time the entire building is safe on four corners with additional concrete retaining walls which was not shown at all.we have a competent engineer but no one can avoid natural calamities and we are not new or unrecognised like some person has written we are in this field for more than 13 years and we don't go around advertising the work or projects we have completed but still when we are in this field we have to take all forms of criticism positively and i thank my clients for standing with me in these testing times.thanks mr ramesh sir it gives me confidence when i know that no matter what happens my clients will always stand by me and the good work i have done all these years and adding to my note the media should atleast take the views of the architecture or engineer before saying that residents are at risk.atleast people will not be misguided or mislead in anyway.we are on the rectifying process right away.thank you all for your views and opinions will surely work more on it in the future.

Mr.Prabhu I would not make baseless allegations against the builder who is a reputed builder.I suggest you come down and please have a look at what is the difference between boundary wall and retaining wall. I dont think after seeing it with your eyes, yu will have any doubts on this building.

If they are building flats anywhere and everywhere, these type of disasters will not be a surprise anymore. Now a days, builders do not spare even the slopes, paddy fields, river banks etc etc. The cost of getting licence to build the apartment projects are unbelievably high and unofficial. Ultimately the buyer pays that money.

Mangalore city suburb is mainly terrain region geographically as such during heavy down pour this type of land slide is expected. Having said that, I see as per photos above, the place of 'Vellankani Abode' is not that much
risky or dangerous as few commentators expressed here. I personally know Mr.Vivek fernandes,Pro of Vishal Builders/Enterprises who is in this line since last 11 or 12 years. He himself being an engineer having gained immense knowledge in civil works employes good engineers to supervise all his building projects. All most all his residential projects are budget house for common/middle class families and hundreds of such people have gained abundantly over the years by was of good appriciation value.Further more Mr.Vivek is a gentleman with kind heart towards low income group people and done good service by providing low budget/good quality residences. He never ever compromised on quality and seen up and downs in his business. He will see that there will not be any financial loss for any of his projects for whatsoever reason. That is his strength and secret of success.I wish him good luck.

Looks really dangerous.Buildings and flats are put up fast, and rest earth is pulled and piled at the side.Retained wall is of no use when at the sides Drainage of water coming from above or sides has no outlet. In India rains a lot ,thatswhy important canal for rain water Drainage is a must.sometimes some neighbour houses let it to the neighbouring land instead of letting to City canalization.Does in India proves anyone from official side about the stability and rights before let occupy?Hope the buillding will remain safe.

There are many buildings on hill and hill tops in the modern village of Mangalore. I ask the readers of Daijiworld is it safe for these type of buildings since the builders will not do a good job and in the long run the occupants will be in danger. Hence prospective buyers please do take care when looking for a flat which are located on hills.

Looks like the so called 'retainer wall' was an ordinary stone cement construction and not a tough reinforced one, which should have been the case considering the type of soil on which the building has been constructed!!

Rightly said by the residents, this building is in a precarious condition, as the landslide may continue further!! Residents should immediately hire a structural engineer from a reputed place like NITK or IIT to ascertain the safety of this building!! Jai Mangluru!!

Residents beware, the manager is not an engineer.
Please get the situation evaluated by a competent authority, govt. certified engineer and fire department.
Your lives are in danger as the landslide has exposed the very foundation of the building (as in first 3 photos).

Retaining wall for private apartment is not MCCs job scope. Let them do the works they are supposed to do before expecting them to build retainer wall for private buildings
