Kundapur, Jul 10: A young girl is feared to have drowned after she fell while walking across a wooden bridge over Chakra river at Maranakatte under Kollur police station limits here on Friday July 10.

The deceased, Vismaya Devadiga (7), was going to school accompanied by her mother when the tragedy took place.

The narrow wooden bridge, with no adequate safety, was constructed by the locals after the government turned down their appeal to construct a concrete bridge. The bridge has been regularly used by the locals, but on Friday, the water in the river was overflowing due to heavy rains.

Vismaya, her mother and another child were crossing the bridge, but midway, Vismaya told her mother she wanted to walk ahead alone and let go of her hand. But as soon as she took a few steps, she slipped and fell into the water. The force of the river was such that she got washed away before anyone could even try to rescue her.

As soon as the news got around, locals gathered at another bridge located about 4-5 kilometres away on the same river, and began searching for the girl. They placed pipes and nets in the water in order to obstruct the flow of the river, so that the girl could be spotted if she floats across.

Fire personnel have also arrived at the spot and the search for the girl is still on. MLA Gopal Poojary visited the spot.

Daughter of Shekar and Jalaja Devadiga, residents of Sanyasibettu, Maranakatte, Vismaya was studying in the third standard at Marakatte government school.

Why do we want people's representatives if this is the end result!?. Which ever party they belong, since years they have neglected this and they dont deserve to be peoples representatives and should step down immediately. There are many places like this but these people in Bangalore are only interested in raising their own pay and perks and nothing else!. Who is the MLA of Kundapur at present!?

this was the same case, when I used to go to school in my village! and even today it continues in same state everywhere! So sad! the three months of rains is difficlutest time for kids.. I would propose, the schedule for schools to be adjusted for high rains states! our governemtn is busy giving ari-tarai bhagya and wont do anything to do good to students community!... so many kids dont go to school for such reasons!... summer vacation should be changed and given during pek rains of june/july for high rains area!

I find one sensible comment from you. else all getting disagrees.
The academic year schedule is going on since our good old days.
Surely that needs long overhaul, as also our education system.
Start Academic year from April. Give break from June 15 until August end.

The concrete bridge where all the people stand is not safe either!
A little child can easily slip under the fence pipe into the river.
    PUT AN EXTRA PIPE BETWEEN!

Mr.Gopal Poojary on the spot. what he is watching in this place. instead of that he should go to that place where wooden bridge was built by locals & arrange to provide a permanent bridge. it will help the people & they remember him forever.

we have so many free "bhaghyas" but there is no bhaghya for our basic needs. govt should provide the basic needs of the people instead of unnecessary/unwanted bhaghyas.

pray god for the safe return of child.

It is advisable, not to send the small children to school on a day of heavy downpour. Looking at the pictures it was a dangerous bridge to cross on a day of flooding. While it is disgusting to note that people have to beg our elected representatives for a basic need like a bridge which is very much essential during rainy season, I pray for the safe return of little angel.

THE NARROW WOODEN BRIDGE THAT IS ALSO CONSTRUCTED BY LOCALS FOR THEIR NEEDS AND RAISING WATER LEVEL ARE NOT THE REASONS FOR THE DEATH OF YOUNG GIRL.IT IS SHAME ON THE PART OF CONCERNED AUTHORITIES WHO CAN NOT PROVIDE BASIC NEEDS. NOW THE GAME WILL START BLAMING ONE ANOTHER FOR THIS LAPSE. IT IS SAD AN INNOCENT LIFE IS LOST.
