Puttur, Jul 8: Dharnamma (42), who had been violently thrashed by her husband and found lying in the middle of the road in helpless condition at Uppinangady a few days back, failed to respond to treatment given at the government hospital here, and died on Tuesday July 7.
Dharnamma, daughter of the late Pakeera Gowda from Hirebandady village, had been given in marriage to Shivakumar from Madikeri about eight years back. After the marriage, the couple had begun to reside in a share they got out of family property at Hirebandady. This piece of land was later sold to Dharnamma's brother, Shivanna Gowda, after which the two started living with Shivakumar's sister at Mysuru.
The husband-wife duo suddenly arrived at Uppinangady from Mysuru a few days back. It is said that Shivakumar, who mercilessly beat up his wife, escaped after dumping Dharnamma on the road near a hotel at Uppinangady. The people, who saw her lying there in helpless condition, admitted her into the government hospital here.
As the family members from her parents side were unhappy with Dharnamma on some issue, they did not come forward to help her. As such, she was being treated as a destitute there. After she died on Tuesday, her brothers refused to even claim her body, it is gathered. Therefore, her body has been preserved in the mortuary at Mangaluru. The police have asked her relatives or heirs if any to contact Uppinangady station.
