Argentina announces Davis Cup team

Buenos Aires, July 4 (IANS): The captain of Argentina's Davis Cup team, Daniel Orsanic, has announced the players who will face Serbia in the quarterfinals of the tennis tournament.

The team includes Leonardo Mayer (World No.21), Diego Schwartzmann (64), Federico Delbonis (73) and Carlos Berlocq (121). Orsanic is continuing with the team that won against Brazil 3-2 in February during the first round of the most important international team event in men's tennis, reports Xinhua.

The Argentina captain had hoped to count on Juan Monaco (35) but the former top-10 player announced on Thursday that he would have to withdraw from the competition due to an injured right wrist. 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will also miss the tournament due to a recent surgery on his ongoing left wrist injury.

Therefore, the 28-year-old Mayer will lead the South American team in singles while Schwartzmann will be the No.2. It is probable that Delbonis and Berlocq will participate in doubles, however, this could be changed depending on the results from the first day of the series.

Argentina will host Serbia from July 17 to 19 at Tecnopolis.

The European team, who won the tournament in 2010, are expected to include World No.1 Novak Djokovic. The South American side reached the final in 1981, 2006, 2008 and 2011 but has never won the tournament.
