Debt-ridden farmer in Mandya immolates himself

Bengaluru, Jun 25 (IANS): A 50-year-old farmer, reportedly in heavy debt, immolated himself on Thursday by setting his sugarcane field on fire and then jumping into it in Karnataka's Mandya district, police said.

Farmer Ninge Gowda committed suicide by setting his sugarcane field in Pandavapura on fire and jumping into it, as he was unable to pay back loan after he suffered loss due to nearby mills not buying his crop, a police official told reporters.

The incident outraged hundreds of farmers who blocked the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, seeking compensation for the victim's family and government action against sugar mill owners for not paying arrears and not crushing their current crop.

Farmers' organisations across the state have been agitating for a week over factory owners not clearing arrears and crushing their current crop due to stocks piling up and sugar prices falling.

Record production for the third consecutive year in the state led to sugar prices slump to Rs.19 per kg from Rs.32 in March.

With the 10-day monsoon session of the state legislature beginning from June 29 in Belagavi in the state's northern region, about 510 km from here, the government on Wednesday decided to seize sugar from 45 factories and auction it.

On the direction of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, state Cooperation Minister H.S. Mahadev Prasad told sugar mill owners to clear dues of Rs.925 crore they owe to farmers since the 2013-14 fiscal, an official told IANS.

Karnataka is the third largest sugar-growing state in India after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Minister Prasad, meanwhile, said: "As recovery certificates were issued to all sugar mills early this month, we will be forced to seize their stocks if they do not begin crushing new cane and pay arrears to farmers."

According to the cooperation department estimates, about 30 lakh tonnes of sugar, valued at Rs.6,000 crore, was lying in mills across the state, as their owners were unwilling to sell at lower prices after having bought the cane at higher prices.

About 70 lakh tonnes of sugarcane was produced this year following a good monsoon last year and abundant water for the fields.

it is very sad. tragedy is our state govt is providing free annaghagya. you need not to pay money but you will get ration. indirectly they it shows that people sit idle & get the benefit. but here there is no value for hard work of farmer. they are asking money for their hard work. they don't want any "FREE BHAGYA". all the bhagyas are temporary & it wont work in longway. instead it create financial burden to the govt. if the govt continue this kind of free bhagya programs, then from where they will get the money for this. it is really a sad incident. No congress politicians are speaking about this suicide. if it happens in other state Rahul will visit & give the statement.

Secondly, They have said that they dont have any proposal to withdraw Article 370 relating to J&K and also uniform civil code will not be implemented!. Thirdly, Modi has said that they are not building Ram temple and will maintain status-quo!, Fourth, Modi government has said that they will not do anything against reservation to SC/ST/OBC and will continue by adding more categories to it!,. Fourth, Modi has also said that the nightmarish Aadhar scheme will be continued despite SC and people's reservation's and it will be seen that everything will be brought under the scheme!. Very sad, My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of the farmer. May God comfort them in their hard time heal their wounds help them come out from the sorrow, pain and agony.
Ministers are touring, donating to get international name, fame, awards and they don’t have time to watch what happening in our own nation, rich are enjoying with wealth, may waste for entrainment, but neglect poor. And poor are earning for daily bread and fulfill needs, laboring, hard working but not coming out from poverty, tears in eyes, wounds in hearts watching wealthy person's life and crying questing is there is end for my struggle, Is I have a good day to enjoy my life happy and peacefully? Is I will be blessed like that?
Now even after this government came how much the spent to tour, donate…….is they think at least our nation there are needs to fulfill also.
May God help poor, wipe away tears, and bring out from poverty. And avoid in feature like this situation.

First let me pray almighty that his soul is R.I.P. and all we need to support this family. Today situations of small farmers are very pathetic and miserable. He grows food for us and we are not paying the right price his effort. Here sugar cane farmers sold their sugar cane to the sugar can factory and immediately he should paid the money due to him. I understand that sugar factory owenors kept the due from last two years. How a farmer can survive in this situation ? This is tha reason now days stopped cultivation. what else can he do ? My suggestion is that immediately government should take the responsibility of clear of dues of the farmer and claim money from the sugar factory owner. Both State / Cental should take equal responsibilities. Other wise more such cases will be reported. My specail request with all pls do not blame each other ( BJP/ Cong, etc.) at least in this case. Let us help the farmers family get the justice. In such situation, High court / Human Right Commission should have acted itself using their - Suomoto power. Kindly note it is the responsibility of all citizens to support farmers family who gives/grows food for us.

Labour, transportation costs are eating into the income of farmers. Nature also plays spoil sport, which the government can assist in.

Irrespective of education/skill set, every labourer today desires a MNC/IT/Gulf/Bank salary. The MNC/IT/Bank/Gulf jobs, take out so much productivity from the employee, but daily wagers have no commitment on productivity, hence the production cost to the farmer eats into his fair income.

Let us first solve the labour problem, increase productivity, farmers will get the boost.

Nagesh, Maharashtra your own government is there and 1008 farmers have committed suicide!. Your Modi talks about Indian farmers but buys wheat from Australia and donates billions of dollars to Nepal, Mongolia etc. The first thing BJP government after coming to power in Karnataka did was to fire on farmers rally and killed them! and this despite Yeddy taking oath in the name of farmers!. Why does central government announce minimum procurement price for farm products!?.Think of these first and then blame state government.
