Mangaluru: Mescom causes accident; bike ambulance rider arrives sans helmet

Mangaluru, Jun 8: An accident took place on Monday June 8 evening near Maryhill on Airport Road where a scooter hit an electric pole. The electric pole was not the one erected on the roadside - it was kept irresponsibly by the Mescom department on the road. The rider of the scooter was severely injured and was taken to the hospital by onlookers.

In further display of irresponsibility, the newly-launched bike ambulance rider arrived at the spot without wearing helmet and the stipulated jacket.

As per eyewitnesses, the rider hit the electric pole lying on the road while overtaking another vehicle. The visibility was also very poor due to heavy monsoon clouds. The impact of the collision was such that the rider fell on the road. The metal strapped on the pole made the situation worse. The injury was severe as the front side of the bike got completely damaged on impact.

The injured was rushed to hospital. But as a call had already gone to 108, the bike ambulance arrived later. The rider of the bike ambulance (emergency medical technician) seemed like a careless young man going on a picnic without wearing a helmet. His helmet was seen resting beside the seat of the bike instead of on his head. He was not wearing the stipulated jacket either.

Speaking to daijiworld, regional manager of 108 ambulance service Mohan Patil said that the bike ambulance technicians have already been given two pairs of boxer suits and four pairs of jackets and they need to compulsory wear them while on duty. It is also mandatory for them to wear helmets while riding, he added.

"They need to wear them so that they can be distinguished from other riders on the road. In some remote places too they have been found to be wearing slippers on duty, and we have already given them notice and warned of action. They should also wear helmet and identity cards without fail. We will hold a meeting and give them warning," Patil said.

Health minister U T Khadar's phone was not reachable.

Mescom should remember that road is not a place where poles can be kept. Bike ambulance riders need to realise that when they come to help the injured they should take care not to get themselves injured.

There is no proper organizational structure for 108 ambulance service all are lazy workers. There should be someone to closely monitor their activities and take immediate action without any delay.

my opinion on these lazy workers is they should be immediately terminated, and should be banned from getting job in any government enterprises. Then only some fear will be there among these people.

I am Astonished, as he heard the call he came to save the person immediately. Is Saving a person is much important or rather the Medical fellow wearing a helmet. I support the person as he reached the place soon as he can rather than wasting 2 mins saving for unlocking his lock of helmet (fine can be issued) but it does not matter as he saved a life. thanks to the Lord as there was no traffic for the main ambulance as it was rainy season.

@Abhinand Udipi,of course he came immediately but without wearing his helmet. It is negligence pure.Everyone has to follow rules and regulations specially when one has to save life.what if he never reaches the place and get injured self because of his negligence?carelessness from everyone.Messcom is also not without fault. They are the Nr.one carelessness.and road workers just place the Stones where they want.and riders even in rainy seasons overtake and Speed .such People are self in danger and are causing others also in danger.Sad.

He looks more like a MESCOM technician rather than a emergency first aid personnel.

Mescom is managed by irresponsible guys and has become a symbol of mismanagement now. They often forget they are involved in an essential service and have taken for granted that people are always at their mercy. They are not people-friendly and service oriented. The whole system is corrupt and the staff are, hence, negative. Customers charged with massive bills, perhaps the only state where the tariff is far higher than the production cost [power purchases from private sector excluded], are treated like second class citizens. Electricity supply act and directives from regulatory authorities are flouted rampantly to defend later on flimsy reasons. Send a mail to the top people at Mescom and you may not get a response for month together. Managing Director and executive Engineers, being the people at helm of affairs, are no exception to this. Mismanagement and human errors will be camouflaged in technical reasons to evade accountability and responsibility.

Everything directly concerning to customers are out-sourced. Regular staff is deployed and involved only in administrative areas open for corruption. Though I am a strong opponent of privatisation, I now feel that power sector needs to be deregulated and opened to private sector, just to get rid of this public liabilities. If ESCOMS are eliminated from the power supply scene, customers can lead a dignified life. By the trends and practice at Mescom, do not surprise if the accident victim get a notice for paying the cost of damaged electric pole!!!! Managing Director of Mescom is in deep slumber, consciously aware of what is happening down the line, and when he will wake-up?

Mr. Vijay, thanks for your observation. Airport road is not Highway. Many lives are lost in this route. Because of the nature of my work, I always on the move in the city. Besides my late eldest sisters house, niece house and my other family members stay in Bondel and I have been using that road too. Most of the accidents take place due to over speeding, reckless driving like zig zag driving, overtaking on the wrong side. Sometimes even accident takes place when the victim is correct and follows the road rules. Just few days ago, two bikes collided at Kaikamba , Kulshekar and lucky they did not get killed as the traffic on the opposite side(Maroli side) which is highway was not there at that moment.
So it is always better we take precaution while driving, rest leave the matter to our destiny.
Once the life or limbs lost, finally the suffer is the victim, whoever may be at fault. While driving, let us all remember that our near and dear ones, who need us, wait for us at home to reach safely. Jai Hind.

    Nithin,

Has anything is India done until now perfectly. No. So why complain. This is India. Just see the cause of the accident. No one is bothered to put warning signs. Interlocks are all over the place. I can list a hundred things that is wrong here or there.

Having the motorbike ambulance might be good idea in theory. But not in practice. Just see our roads that have been recently widened. They dont have emergency lanes. In case of emergency what are they gonna do? Fly over the traffic jams. I heard that they are going to introduce Air Ambulance soon. That may help.

Our whole infrastructure is messed up because of rampant corruption and ill planning.

Dear Daiji readers, please read the news carefully and see the photos before commenting.
The fact is that the two wheeler rider was riding with high speed and had overtaken even though the visibility was poor on the road due to rains. With high speed, the impact was so severe, the front tyre of the two wheeler got dismantled as per the picture.
The heavy 9 meter electric pole was kept at the centre of the road close to the divider for erection as it must be a ongoing work which could not have been completed overnight.
In many instances, as Mr Baptist said, the two wheeler riders ride with high speed irrespective of the prevailing climatic and other road conditions, violating all the traffic rules and when the accident takes place, we the Indians, specially people of D.K. and Udupi blame others. We are very good in the blaming games, even though the fault lies with rider who meets with an accident. Sorry to say this. I have been riding two wheeler for the last 31 years covering more than 4 lakh kilometers and driving four wheeler too and I have seen people do not follow traffic rules and indulge in over speeding, thus endangering not only their own lives but also of other road users. So let us stop blaming others when the fault lies with the victim. May God grant us wisdom to all of us.
Mr. Baptist, I agree with you 100% on your observations. Jai Hind.

you mean any one can keep anything on the middle of the road without any warning signal or poles and blame driver and his vehicle for moving on that road.. low visibility, heavy rain or overspeed may be supporting factors for this accident but the main reason is electric pole lying near the divider or on the speed track. if it was not kept there he would have passed.. instead of blaming primary cause u r behind secondary cause.. he was not lucky enough to recognize the electric pole on the road in low visibility may be because colour of road and pole is somewhat similar

Stop blaming MESCOM, Government and for the safety rules. I would say why the victim of the bike not followed the traffic rules? He knew that it was raining he should not have overtaken going very close to the divider. The two wheelers overtake any sides of the road
Ultimately ending with accident and blame the Government. MESCOM would have temporarily kept the pole for installation and it clearly seen the electri pole was extreme end of the divider the two wheeler shouldn't have overtook at hat point.

i agree with you but not totally.. because again the blame goes to the government.. why driving licence is issued so easily.. why our road safety or rules haven't been upgraded like arab or western countries.. many of the two wheeler riders even dont know the basic hand signals.. then overtaking from left or wrong side is much far to learn.. many of car drivers dont know if u want to drive slow then you have to move on left lane.. dont you think government has failed in awaring people about traffic rules.. or people of india have chalta hai attitude..? electric pole is kept on speed track.. itz not the sign of responsible work.. mescom employees are on mistake here.. they have to be prosecuted.. moving fast or slow is not the question.. QUESTION IS WHY ELECTRIC POLE IS KEPT ON THE ROAD

Yes. Mescom or for that matter any Govt dept works are done with least safety measures. Mescom is at fault here, but see this story of carelessness does not end there. Why the accident victim had to overtake a vehicle by going so close to the divider? (It looks like pole is kept near the divider). 2 wheeler riders are the most errant drivers. They do not see left and right just move. I was once riding a car and was on the lane close to the divider when a 2 wheeler came in between my car and divider and fell on my car. Luckily traffic was bumper to bumper and slow moving. Over that he did not had an inch of guilty!!! 2 wheeler riders should know that they will be most probably at the receiving end if something happens and should drive with proper road sense. Take example of this Ambulance bike rider. This goes on. Starting from the Govt institution till the pedestrians no one bothered about the safety of self and another. (look at the people gathered and standing on the road). There is a chain of lawlessness as far as the road use is concerned. I wish the injured recovers soon.
