Kasargod, Jun 3: Tension gripped Mangad under Bekal police station limits at around midnight on Tuesday June 2 after Congress and CPI(M) activists clashed over some trivial issue.
The police had to resort to lathi charge to control the mob that went on a rampage for about three-four hours. Stones were pelted at a Madrasa and at vehicles and shops.
Police from Bekal and Kasargod stations as well as SP A Srinivas rushed to the spot, but lathi charge failed to have any impact on the angry mob. The police then fired as many as 16 tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
Bekal police ASI Anantakrishna, Congress worker Abdul Rahiman (21) and CPM worker Sudhakar (28) were injured in the clashes and admitted to hospital. Among them, Abdul Rahiman's condition is said to be serious and he has been shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru for advanced treatment.
On Wednesday June 3, the CPI (M) activists began a protest, but were stopped by the police.
Due to heavy police deployment led by DSP Harishchandra Nayak and Bekal SI P Narayana over, the situation on Wednesday was under control.
Both Congress and CPI (M) have registered cases against each other.
