Barasat (West Bengal), May 23 (IANS): Table toppers Mohun Bagan beat Sporting Clube de Goa 2-0 in a crucial I-League encounter at the Barasat District Sports Stadium here on Saturday.
With the win, Mohun Bagan extended their lead at the top of the I-League standings, taking a step closer to clinching the League crown with 38 points from 19 games, having won 11 and lost three.
Sporting lost their seventh match of the season and are struggling in seventh spot with 20 points from 19 games.
Goals from Sehnaj Singh and Sony Norde helped the side win on home soil.
At the start of the match, both sides got a couple of chances but failed to make the best use of the advantage. But Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 66th minute.
Mohun Bagan finally had the goal they were looking for through a free kick after Pierre Boya was brought down by Sandesh Jhingan.
Sehnaj was the scorer as the defensive midfielder unleashed a thunderous strike that beat the wall and goalkeeper Ravi Kumar to hit the back of the net.
The Barasat stadium erupted once again in joy 11 minutes later as Norde doubled the lead for the hosts with a grounded shot after receiving a crisp pass from Sukhen Dey.
Sporting goalkeeper Ravi Kumar could only touch the ball as it found its way into the goal.
The match finally ended with the hosts taking full points after a clinical performance in the second half.
