Kasargod, May 18: In a shocking incident, a woman was brutally murdered by her sonin full public view at Kumble bus stand here on Monday May 18.
The deceased has been identified as Padmavati (62), wife of Kunihraman, a resident of Chowki Azadnagar.
At around 12.30 pm on Monday, mother and son came by bus from Kasargod to Kumble. Just after Padmavati got down, her son Anil Kumar took out a knife and stabbed her.
The people who were at the spot rushed a critically injured Padmavati to Kumble hospital, from where she was shifted to Kasargod hospital. However, she failed to respond to treatment and breathed her last by evening.
Meanwhile, the accused Anil Kumar, who tried to escape from the spot, was caught by the locals and handed over to police.
Sources said that Anil allegedly stabbed his mother to death over a property dispute. It is learnt that he reportedly committed the crime for 50 cents of land. He used to frequently quarrel with his mother over property, sources said.
Padmavati's husband Kunhiraman passed away about five months ago. A few days later, Anil allegedly drove his mother out of the house, after which Padmavati started living with her daughter at Puthige in Kumble.
Padmavati had 50 cents of land in her name which Anil wanted for himself. He even filed a case against his mother in Kasargod police station. In this connection, Padmavati, Anil and daughter Anita were called to the police station in Kasargod on Monday and discussions were held. Padmavati agreed to give 30 cents of land to Anil and 20 cents to Anita. They were asked to come to the police station again on Tuesday May 19.
However, soon after coming out of the police station, Anil reportedly insisted that his mother should transfer her house and the land in front of it in his name, and give the same in writing. They then took bus from Kasargod to Kumble to visit a relative, but as soon as Padmavati got down, Anil stabbed her even as people watched in shock.
Anil had been running a workshop at Nullipady, but his addiction to alcohol brought him to streets. For this reason, he wanted to sell his mother's property and was pestering her to transfer it in his name, sources said.
Further investigations are on.
