Mumbai: Aruna Shanbaug, in coma since 1973 after brutal rape, is dead

Mumbai, May 18 (IANS): The world's oldest comatose patient, nurse Aruna Shanbaug who had been in a vegetative state ever since she was raped and choked with a dog leash, died in Mumbai's KEM Hospital on Monday morning after remaining in coma for almost 42 years, Dean Avinash Supe said.

She was in her early 60s and was deserted by most of her relatives during her lifetime. She was looked after with dedication by nurses of the hospital, where she lay in Ward No.4A.

Since nearly a week, Shanbaug suffered from pneumonia and related ailments. As she found it difficult to breathe, she was put on a ventilator and was responding to the treatment.

Hailing from Haldipur, North Kanara in Karnataka, she died around 8.30 a.m., plunging the entire hospital into a pall of gloom, especially the nursing staff who idolized her.

Supe said police permission and other formalities are being completed before finalizing Shanbaug's last rites later on Monday.

"I appeal to all people to help us trace out any relatives or people close to Shanbaug. They can get in touch with the hospital immediately. This can avoid any issues later, though we have been her official care-givers," Supe told IANS.

A junior nurse, Shanbaug was brutally raped by contract sweeper Sohanlal B. Walmiki in the same hospital on the night of November 27, 1973 when she was changing.

While indulging in the act, he had choked her with a dog leash that snapped oxygen supply to her brain, resulting in severe injuries to the brain stem and cervical chord that left her in a vegetative state since then.

Aged barely 20, Aruna was planning to get married to a doctor working in the same hospital.

Later, the police registered a case of robbery and attempt to murder as the hospital authorities allegedly suppressed the anal rape perpetrated on her to avoid social ostracism of the victim and the fact that she was planning to get married soon.

Walmiki was subsequently arrested and convicted two serve two concurrent seven years' sentences. He was later set free and is believed to be settled in Delhi since.

Shanbaug's former teacher, Anant Gaitonde, remembers her as "a very intelligent nursing student" in the early 1970s at the KEM Nursing College.

"She was a bright student, always of a very helpful nature; going out of the way to help her co-students. The incident happened just when she was planning to settle down in life, both personal and professional. The crime perpetrator got away with a minor punishment, but she suffered all her life," Gaitonde told IANS in a choked voice.

In January 2011, the Supreme Court took up a euthanasia petition filed on Shanbaug's behalf by celebrity author and journalist Pinki Virani in December 2010.

Though the apex court turned down Virani's petition in March 2011, in a landmark it permitted 'passive euthanisia' in India.

The Supreme Court also specified guidelines for passive euthanasia, including withdrawal of treatment or food that would allow the patient to survive.

Why does the Indian Government still sleeping in formulating and bring into force a breath taking law to torture these wicked sons of the Devil who ruin the life of women. Women in India, please wake up and demand such a law and through your determination, make the Government to pass this much needed protection cover to women. Follow the example of Islamic Countries. In this country, if such barbaric acts were done on the kith and kin of the Politicians, then they would wake up from sloth.

It is real shock and agony to hear about Late Aruna. Even though she didn't had any happiness on this earth, i hope and believe her here after will be in paradise. It is heart breaking to hear that culprit who committed this shameful act is free out leading normal life in Delhi. He deserve much more severe punishment than what was given. Indian law system must punish these monsters in such a way that nobody dare to do so. In Saudi there is severe punishment for committing rape. But unfortunately in our our country the intensity of punishment is not at all severe and people are not afraid of the outcome of their crime. This is evident in last few rape cases in India. God bless all her colleagues who considered her and treated her with full dignity until her last breath.

This moved me to tears. Why God does this to the people who are good and just would have been an asset to the society??? Even a hardened sinner should not be punished like this. And this angel was just a 20-yr old innocent student with dreams for the future. I hope she is really happy finally and smiling in heaven. DEATH TO THE DOG WHO DID THIS TO HER. If there were no law, I would have loved to break your spine and make you paralyzed forever and would have loved mocking you everyday...I would have done that rather than killing you.it would have been so much fun. I hope you get to read this coward.

While I agree with your sentiments, I respectfully differ with your opinion on her "to be hubby" dumping her. It is cruel to say so, particularly because this gentleman visited her every day for 4 years before he finally moved on with his life. It is very cruel to expect a young man to stop living his life when there was clearly no way Aruna could be normal again. I am sure Aruna would have wanted him to move on too.

The true story of Aruna is very tragic and has touched me immensely. Recently there was a gang rape of a young woman in Delhi that caught media attention, but the story of Aruna is more tragic and needs to told for generations to come to highlight the problem of how men treat the rape of woman, but the most important part of the story was left out.

After his release from prison this monster did not continue his live his life in Delhi, instead there was no remorse from him for what he had done and he did not repent in any way shape or form. When the monster learned that Aruna had survived the attack and was till alive but in a state of comatose, he chose to attack her again and to ensure he kill her and complete the job which he had left unfinished. He came back to Bombay 8 years later and went straight to the KEM hospital room where she was being cared, and attacked her again in a vegetative state but she survived the attack the second time when the hospital staff came to her rescue and he was overpowered and handed over to police for the second time. After that, the hospital moved her into a special room on the top corner most room, for which access could be gained only through the nursing station and her door was under lock and key.

There is a lot more to this story and I’m at a loss of words to see how inhuman and how cruel could man be and all this makes me very, very sad story. I think Daijiworld should have a full investigative report and this report will truly shock the moral consentience and move any normal human being.

It's sad to hear about Aruna Shanbaugh's state of life, the way she lived in the hospital, surrounded by her friends Nurses and doctors. All of them are real human beings, who cared for her so many years, or else look at her sister, who din't even bothered to see her till, she herself died, plus may be many close relatives abanded her, cruel corpses. anywayz, what has to happen has to happen, lets pray for her soul to rest in peace atleast now. But my heartfelt Blessings to all those who cared her during these period, plus the Hospital owners who took her pain and so humbly and cared her so much!! My Blessings and thanks for thier gratefulnes and big heart.
As far as the rape and justice is concerned, I spit on both, this will never improve, and there is no true justice in this cruel world, only thing is one and all should be careful that they won't get fall into this kind of trap, God please save people from such kind of athrocities, before it falls on them. But one of the greatest thing to be noted in the period of her going into coma till her sad demise is the nurses and other staff of KEM Hospital taking loving care of her all these 42 years, it is reported more than 90% of the nurses attended on her at one time or the other in shifts after she was dumped by her close ones including her to be hubby due to her vegatitive condition!! Should the case of Aruna Shanubaug be labelled as shame to humanity or a lesson of Moral to all of us ? I say, both. Firstly its shame because an employee of the same hospital but lower in grade than hers sexually assaulted her. His strength ? The body that was stronger than hers. So, is this what a man uses his strength for ?

Secondly a lesson of humanity because the hospital that opined whether if she should be allowed an end to her miseries by lethal means, continued to look after her just like a mother who tends to a handicap child.

There is one more point comes to our mind - her torturer. We all know that Valmiki served life sentence as per law and came out. Obviously he had no audacity to come in public but there is no doubt he may be living happily with his family. Does he deserve peace while the nurse lived a life she wasn't aware of ?

My appeal joins with several those who think punishment to rapists should be made sterner. RIP Ms. Shanubaug !

In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that a spate of rape cases have shamed India he urged parents to take responsibility for the behaviour of their sons rather than put the onus on their daughters.

"When we hear about these rapes, our heads hang in shame," the PM said in an unscripted speech from Red Fort in the capital.

"Those who commit rape are also someone's sons. You should stop them before they take the wrong path," the PM said at a time when sexual violence against women and children has ignited national outrage and debate.

"Even when they are only 12, young girls are always being asked so many questions by their parents, like 'where are you off to?'. But do these parents ask their sons where they are going?" he asked. "The law will take its own course but as a society every parent has a responsibility to teach their sons the difference between right and wrong," the PM said.
