Karkala, May 15: Deputy chief of fire brigade at Mumbai, Sudhir G Amin (50), who suffered 92 percent burns when fighting fire which erupted in century-old 'Gokul Nivas' building in Kalbadevi in South Mumbai, breathed his last on Thursday May 14.
Amin was battling for life in the intensive care unit of National Burns Centre at Airoli, Navi Mumbai. He had suffered multiple organ failure.
Amin had earned President's gallantry award for his fire rescue work during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. On May 11 he was belatedly granted a promotion due since over five months by the BMC.
The firemen of the metro paid him rich tribute, besides giving him a guard of honour in recognition of his exemplary contribution to the service of the nation.
Amin had rushed to help out the distressed people of Kalbadevi, although it was a holiday for him. He had enterd the building to save two of his colleagues, who were facing risk of life inside the building. Amin had got stuck inside thereafter with his colleagues, and could be rescued after a long time. But by then he had suffered extensive fourth degree burn injuries.
Amin from Daddody in Nitte in the taluk, was to visit his hometown on May 13. He had been identified as an honest and efficient officer, and he was promoted as the deputy chief of Mumbai fire brigade two days before the fatal accident.
