Udupi, May 10: "At a time when students are completely forgetting the schools and colleges they studied in, it is noteworthy to see the old students of Shirva Hindu Pre-University College building and donating a cricket ground. Talented players below the age of 16 should love the game and work hard while devoting equal attention to studies. I wish that players from this rural place play and represent the state and the country," said Abey Kuruvilla, former Indian bowler.
Kuruvilla was speaking after inaugurating season (hard) ball ground built by Mumbai entrepreneur Sooda Karunakar Shetty on behalf of the Hindu Pre-University College old students' association on Sunday, May 10. The college is managed by Shirva Vidyavardhaka Sangha. Kuruvilla also unveiled the cricket logo.
Shirva Vidyavardhaka Sangha president and also the chancellor of Nitte university N Vinaya hedge said, "World renowned cricketers like Dhoni and Raina come from rural areas. Shirva Vidyavardhaka Sangha strives hard to uplift the rural talents. We have very good ground and other facilities. Deserving talents will be encouraged. Hockey football and indoor games too, in addition to cricket will be encouraged in our institution."
Sooda Karunakar Shetty was felicitated by N Vinaya Hegde and V Subbaiah Hegde the correspondent of the college, on the occasion. Kuthyar Prasad, the organizing secretary of old students' association was felicitated by Kuruvilla.
Kalathur Shekara Shetty, Kuthyaru Anjarumane Narayana Shetty, Udupi district cricket association secretary Balakrishna Parkala, KCA Mangaluru zonal convenor Manohar Ameen, retired professor K Rajagopal, Sundara Mera, Mattaru Ratnakara hedge, old student association president Sorkala Chidananda Hegde were present during the occasion among others .
