Mangaluru: 32-year-old woman dies at Wenlock, family protests alleging negligence

Mangaluru, May 8: Relatives of a woman who died all of a sudden at Wenlock hospital here staged a protest on Friday May 8 alleging doctors of negligence.

The deceased, identified as Poovakka (32), a resident of Ajjavara village, Sullia, passed away on the night of Friday May 7.

It is said that Poovakka had given birth to a baby boy at Lady Goschen Hospital on April 21, and baby had been kept in incubator. She was later discharged and her health was said to be fine.

On May 5, she was admitted to Wenlock hospital as she developed complications and on May 7, she passed away.

The exact cause of death is not yet known.

Her husband Ganesh later filed a complaint in Bunder police station alleging negligence on the part of the doctors.

The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem.

On May 8, Poovakka's family members and relatives gathered at Lady Goschen hospital and also at Wenlock and protested. They demanded the arrest of the doctor.

Bunder police have registered a case.

 

Superintendent of Lady Goschen hospital demoted, transferred

Meanwhile, superintendent of Lady Goschen hospital Dr Shakunthala was demoted and transferred to Wenlock hospital for dereliction of duty, and a probe has been ordered into cases of alleged negligence under her.

Speaking to daijiworld, health minister U T Khadar said that Dr Shakunthala has been demoted, and it is not just over Poovakka death case but three or four such cases that had occured in the past. Till a new superintendent is appointed, the senior most doctor in Lady Goschen hospital would be in charge, he said.

    Health minister has misplaced priorities, as had ever been in recent times. Being picked-up by bike ambulance/regular ambulance will be more fatal than the accident itself as the victim is destined to Govt. Hospitals. Medical books underlines the importance of quality of medical intervention at the first few minutes as crucial in saving the accident victims. We are made to believe that the paramedic arriving the spot on bike ambulance is more qualified and experienced than the specialist waiting for the victim at the hospital. Govt. hospitals are known to have no stock of medicines and diagnostic facilities. With poor infrastructure, even basic protective gears are not provided to doctors and medical staff. Any thing goes wrong anywhere, the qualified doctor can be demoted and transferred to save face. As regard to Wenlock and Lady Goschen, hospitals managed by KMC, Government is hiding under man-made clauses of MoU to wash-off hands and to fool public. Public healthcare is the job of Government and they cannot shirk-off their responsibility on whatsoever reasons. Terms of MoUs shall be used to fix responsibility and accountability. Fiscal management is so deteriorated that total tax collection is not enough to meet revenue expenditure for administration. Shortage of funds everywhere at an overtaxed state! Even 32 Paise fails to reach people on every one rupee spent on welfare, if there any. PPP model of dispensing development and welfare is introduced to loot public funds and private lands. Whatever be the end-results, PR Management of Health Minister is excellent. Ultimate aim of most politician is not welfare of people, but leads in next election. Best option is to remain in headings to get the lead.

    as per news channels the lady died due to pulmonary embolism.

    lady goshen or wenlock dont hace the set-up to treat that condition.

    even at advanced centers the mortality due to pulmonary embolism is high.

    AND ONE BASIC QUESTION TO KHADER :- HOW CAN YOU TELL THAT DR SHAKUNTALA, the superidendent is responsible for pulmonary embolism & death of that unfortunate lady ? can a hospital superintendent examine every patient & treat ? for that matter these administrative doctors, are the competent to diagnose & treat ?

    all daiji readers :- who want to become doctor now, thats too medical superintendent of lady goshen hospital ?

    two things what i heard are like this:-

    - let learned people judge the capacity & medical knowledge & background of our district surgeon /DHO /etc. how much knowlegde they have, other than buttering health minister...

    2.) if medical superintendent is responsible for death of a patient in a hospital of more than 400 patients without infrastructure & man power,

    then dont you think that the health mnister is also responsible for not providing the infrastructure & manpower ?

    RIP!!!!

    now govt doctors also wont accept complicated cases!!!! no doctor can give 100% gurantee...

    by the way, can someone define " medical negligence?"

    just see the cost of medical care at USA /UK & see in spite of that cost, how many patients are dyeing in hospitals.

    we are not immortal.. all of us are going to die.. either in hospital or at home. if you die at hospital, that does not mean medical negligence, doctors are not god & they them self are going to due on day!!!

    instead of insulting that old lady doctor, let people / MLA lobo /minister khader appoint more nurses / paramedics/ sweepers / wardboys/ technitians...

    there is no shortage of doctors. but shortage of c & d group of workers. acute shortage of space / beds / toilet/ sanitary issues/ good canteen/ clean waiting areas.

    of course there is shortage of humanity !!!!

    Not at all proper facility in this hospital. Valuable life ending without proper arrangement in this Hospital. Concerned person should visit this hospital and shoud provide more facilty required. Every life is valuable for his family whether he is rich or poor!!

    Very sad. I know this poor girl
    very well..They are financially and educationally very poor and
    so they are depending government hospitals in such conditions.This is utterly negligence to the life of these people and it should never be never especially in government hospitals because that is the last resort of these poor people
    and strict action to be taken against the doctor those who involved in this case and let it be a model and moral in the future..

    When the patients come to the hospital they have close association with the doctors, when the patients leave the hospital they close the association with the doctors
    Anxiety and apprehension of a patient at the admission is directly related to urgency and restlessness for discharge.

    At the time of crisis two things are remembered God n doctor. God is adored n doctor is used. After the crisis is over, the God is forgotten n doctor is abused!!!
