Kundapur, May 5: The case relating to the mysterious death of a woman from Gangolli but settled in Mumbai, in a lodge in the town sometime back, has been changed into murder case. Preliminary information suggested that Azhar Afzal Khan from Mumbai, who is the accused in the case, had killed the woman for the gold ornaments she wore. He was arrested with help from Mumbai police.
Azhar, who was employed in a shop dealing in garments, had fled after embezzling funds from there nearly eight years ago. He had earned expertise in becoming friendly with women, and stealing their belongings at an opportune time. He had robbed gold chain, bangles etc weighing about 12 sovereigns from the body of Lalita Devadiga after killing her, before fleeing to Mumbai. It is learnt that he sold these ornaments in a shop in Mumbai.
A woman, who is an acquaintance of both the accused and Vaishnavi, daughter of Lalita Devadiga, had allowed Vaishnavi and her children to stay at her home on the day Vaishavi left from her home. The policemen used her as a bait to nab the culprit. They asked her to remain in touch with the fleeing woman. On the basis of information given by Vaishnavi when she called the woman, the police arrested the accused as soon as he landed in Mumbai.
The accused is being interrogated. Sources said that he will be produced in the court on Tuesday. Murder case stands registered in the police station here.
