Mangaluru, May 3: The local members of Human Rights Federation of India on Saturday May 2 buried eight bodies that had been lying unclaimed at Wenlock hospital.
The final rites were held at Nandigudda here. Among the eight, six had been identified as Dayanand Shetty, Mallesha, Panduranga Rao, Puttappa, Ratnamma, and Sailesh, while two remained unidentitied. Bodies of all the eight persons had remained unclaimed for many months.
Vijay Prasad Alva of Human Rights Federation said, "We have buried the unclaimed bodies at Nandigudda. Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim had given directions to Wenlock Hospital on how to treat the unclaimed bodies and what should be done with them, and accordingly, hospital officials Dr Rajeshwari and Sesappa responded positively and acted upon the DC's directions quickly.
"We are thankful to the DC and the officials of Wenlock. This has been a long fight, on from a year. The DC has set an example for the whole nation by doing this," he added.
Hanif Saheb, law consultant, Chandrashekar Shetty, district vice-president of Human Rights Federation, Jayaram Shetty, secretary, Vasanth Shetty, Samanvaya Samiti president, Gangadhar Shetty who coordinated the entire procedure and others were present.
