Mangaluru, Apr 17: MLA of Mangaluru south constituency J R Lobo has revealed that the public works department (PWD) of the state has released Rs 6 crore grant for the Tannirbavi-Sultan Battery suspension bridge.
"The work was stalled for years. I wanted to restart the work. The proposed footbridge measuring 410 metres in length and 10 feet in width was designed to hang at a height of 25 feet from the water level was planned but the work could not be executed due to want of funds," said J R Lobo.
The footbridge was planned in 2006 with an outlay of Rs 12 crore and only Rs 1 crore was released in 2008. The work which started in 2012 was supposed to be completed in December 2013, but got stalled eventually. J R Lobo tried his best to get the funds, but since the tourism department did not have such a big amount, the proposal was transferred to the PWD.
Now that Rs 6 crore has been released, the work on the footbridge will begin very soon and the remaining Rs 6 crore will be released in the second phase of the project, Lobo said.
The project will be completed within the next two years, he said.
