Mangaluru, Mar 27: The 24th conference of Karnataka History Congress went under way at Mangala auditorium of Mangalore University at Konaje here on Thursday March 26.
The conference, which is being held under the aegis of the university's history department, was inaugurated by the head of history department of Delhi University, Prof Upindar Singh, is the daughter of former Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh.
Speaking on the occasion, she said that the treasure of intelligence and creative zeal of the middle ages are being purposefully overlooked during discussions on Indian history. She stressed that instead of snubbing intelligent creations of the past era, more discussions and debates should be held about them.
Laying emphasis on the fact that Indian history is unparalleled and great, she said there is a need to conduct exhaustive study and research on stone edicts found in various parts of the country. At the same time, she lamented about shortage of skilled historians for conducting this study. She called upon the young historians to cultivate in-depth interest in philosophical, religious, political, scientific, medical or other spheres related with the country's history including common culture that occupy a place of importance in the world history. She said that it is pertinent to use modern scientific tools and methods while conducting research on ancient history of India.
Retired professor of Karnataka State Open University, Prof G Ramanathan, presided over the inaugural function. Prof B N Naidu of the history department, Bengaluru University, vice chancellor of Mangalore University, Prof Bhyrappa, and president of Karnataka History Congress, Prof Rajanna, were present. Head of history department, Mangalore University, Prof Lokesh, welcomed.
