Mangaluru: Airport ready for uninterrupted functioning from May 1

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Mar 21: The international airport here will be open round the clock with effect from May 1 this year. At present, the airport had been closed for night operations from November 1 last year.

The night operations at the airport had been cancelled as construction of the second parallel taxiway for aircraft landing at the airport to move towards terminal building was in progress. Operation of flights from 11 pm to 7.30 am had been barred to facilitate taxiway construction.

The airport officials said that the work on the taxiway will be complete by the end of April, and the airport will revert to its 24x7 operations from May 1 this year.

Airport still evolving ...not planned properly....The movement of Vehicles was not planned at all.
Chaos both at Arrival and departure .they could have made two separate levels one for Arrival and other for Departure..
The lifts are small and cannot accommodate more than Two people with baggage trolley.....
    But still..Something better than Nothing....

Do we have any choice other than Bajpe Airport we all complain about the airport but at the end we travel only through mangalore airport why?? As per me this is the most convenient airport for all of us staying in this region instead of travelling from Bangalore or Mumbai to Mangalore waiting for few hours is better for luggage :) than travelling 8-12 hrs we are blessed to have an airport in our city unlike most of other cities of India

First of all, we can't have airport at everyone's convenience. Bajpe was chosen initially as it was a natural table top and the cheapest option with the limited landing technology available at that time.

What we should have done is to have multiple road access and build satellite towns nearby for accommodation, aligned industries etc. For a city with rain around 6 months in a year, even the air bridge was not available for a long time. Same is the case with the main entrance and exit of the airport. Only the half part is shaded and when it rains, the entire access area gets wet and it's very difficult to carry luggages. All they should have done is to cover the entire area.

So what we lack is planning based on the local requirements. As with our central plans, budgets etc, once size fits all approach is the root cause of our issues.

There is a significant difference between the Government managed airports like Mangalore and private Airports like Bangalore, Mumbai etc. There is no thought given to passengers convenience, green spaces inside and outside, catering places, transportation, access roads etc. They are all bland, boring and lousy. MIA Terminal is all glass and concrete and no comfort and convenience.

Wilson, this airport was built in 1951. During that time, I don't think open land was an issue in anywhere near undivided DK/NK district. I do understand that, we need proper infrastructure to build the airport, those things will happen automatically as long as you have proper access to the airport. At that time people didn't complain because airport was not their priority. Now it is the priority for most people in surrounding areas (Mangalore, Udupi, Kundapur, North Canara, part of Kerala and other areas too) especially after it became international. I personally used this airport few times, for me main concern was the distance I have to cover to get to this airport using small roads and to make sure that I am not missing the flight. This airport should have been there somewhere between Mulki and Udupi, close to NH highway), in my opinion.

I agree with Donald.Authorities at the Airport should seriously look into Luggage Collection/Conveyor belt area. Recently I flew twice to Mangalore within ten days and while Immigration formalities were completed efficiently within 2 minutes, I had to wait one and half hour to collect my luggage on both the Occasions. There was total Chaos as people descending by escalator cant even step into the custom area as it was jammed by passengers. I am writing this not as criticism but authorities to note and improve the situation. If two international flights land at the same time luggage should be delivered at different Conveyor belts which are available at the Airport.
At Airports It is always a long process and constant monitoring and improving bottleneck areas will result in smooth passage of passenger traffic which is the basic requirement of any International Airport.

The district administration should also try to build proper roads to reach the airport. It is easy to reach to other countries from this airport but very difficult to reach the airport.

The authorities are talking Good about The Airport. Have they taken care of the problems of the passengers who come to the airport. Why has been the road blocked by a barricade at the Arrival & Departure Terminals. If it is opened it will be easy for the flow of traffic. There are vehicles who park and Go. why strict actions is taken. Is i VIP culture. Will the Airport authorities will take not of this

I would say this new terminal building could have planned better! Main drawback is luggage conveyor. It takes ages and very cramped area around. If more than one flight arrives at the same time....there is no space for the passengers even to stand near the luggage conveyor! Next tragedy is the way approach and exit roads built! Totally unscientific. With so much empty space on the hill....they have applied only part of small brain while planning!!

24 hrs operation is good. But who will regulate Pre paid Taxi operators who loot the passengers. Why not pre-paid Autos at the Airport? Why autos are barred to pick the passenger?

    Mr Vishal,
Airports are not constructed has per our convenience, for airports very much open land without any obstruction or densely populated areas is required, Lots of facilities are required such as hotels, hospitals, Transportations etc. Airports are not located or constructed as per people choice but as per specific standard and Aviation requirements, We people can demand for hospitals, hotels, Banks as per our convenience..

This airport has been built at unmanned location, not very convenient for the people from all parts of DK and Udupi district. From Udupi it takes more than 2 hrs to get to this airport. When it was built initially people never complained about it because they hardly ever used this airport or planned to use this airport to travel.
