Mangaluru, Mar 17: Thousands of bidi workers from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasargod districts descended on the streets of city on Tuesday March 17 in protest against the union government over the proposed Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) (Amendment) Bill 2015.

The protest was organized under the banner of CITU and AITUC. The protestors marched from Town Hall to DC's office where a protest meet was held. They demanded the withdrawal of the proposed Bill which they said would put the bidi workers in problems and kill the bidi industry.

The protestors said that there are 10 lac bidi workers in the three districts of DK, Udupi and Kasargod, who depend on bidi work for their livelihood. "The bidi industry helps the economy which in turn contributes to setting up of schools, hospitals, banks and others businesses," they pointed out.

Addressing the gathering, Prasanna Kumar, state chief secretary of CITU said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is curbing the bidi industry. This Act will kill the industry. The government is taking this step without studying the guidelines of WHO and FCC.This Act will hit the industry and create unemployment, hence before bringing about any Act, let the government study the issue thoroughly. The govenment should create alternative arrangements for bidi workers to make them economically stable. After that, the government can do whatever it wants.

"Earlier, a person above 18 could purchase bidi, but the union government has increased this age limit to 21 years. The union government is taking this step to please the corporate sector," he added.

"What will the government do about excise duty collected from bidi industry? Though Rs 6,000 crore was supposed to be given as pension to bidi workers, it has not been done, but union finance minister Arun Jaitley says this is because nobody is claiming the pension and hence the government is using this money for BPL card holders. This is our money and our right. The Modi government is thinking of building Hindu Rashtra and dividint the people," he said.

"There are 10 lac bidi workers in the three districts and the government should provide them health facilities and financial stability; after that its can do whatever it wants," he reiterated.

Seetharam Berinje, chief secretary of AITUC, said, "During elections MLAs and MPs seek votes from bidi workers but when bidi workers face problems and have no proper facilities, they do not care to respond. We condemn this stand of the government and demand that the Bill be withdrawn as it would affect the bidi industry which is the livelihood of several lacs of people.

The protestors later submitted a memorandum to the union government through deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim.

What is the alternative???? Govt has no solution. All corporate politics.
If bidi is injurious to health put a label like on cigarette. It is the choice of the smoker whether to quit or not. Any where in the world only the poor and lower middle class section of society is the victim and to suffer.

Beedi can be banned. There is no cure for cancer and hence BD cannot be banned but it will die on its own and it will be painful.

If bidi spoils health and kills people no problem, but please don’t kill bidi industry.
If pollution injures health and disturbs peace no problem, but don’t support solutions.

Instead of carrying and moving the dead weight of millions of tons (commuters and goods) on wheels, if the huge dead weight is used as a powerful pushing force, we can drastically reduce/eliminate the fuel consumption and the opportunity is to generate a considerable volume of free energy.
The option is to enjoy costs free transportation and pollution free environment. Saved huge funds from oil imports can help the massive job creation and the surface transport sector can be a major revenue generating center (instead of suffering as a cost center, which burns the economy).

What about beef traders in Maharashtra and Haryana?
What about Bar owners in Kerala?

They dont have family to look after?

Beedi workers(vote bank for communists) should come out of the cocoon. Do not put your children to beedi rolling. You can earn 8000 Rupees as a sales boy/girl in Mangalore even if you have not passed SSLC. So come out from the clutches of communists and get a better life.

Ever since i am against this 'rolling bidi home industry' because i lived amongst them. Always i used to think same people can earn more by working at paddy fields or other daily wages jobs around the area where workers are not available. Also smoking and rolling bidi both hazardous to the health.

To compare liquor is hazardous to the health hence it is not allowed to brew at home for sale so it should be with rolling bidi. It is simple as that.

Government should come up with idea how to replace this industry with somethings else like small factories etc

Its true that at a time, many poor families fed their children, educated, clothed and funded their health related problems with earnings out of rolling Beedi.

However, isn't there an end ? Generations after generations, are they going to remain in the same trade ? Their children hardly reach High School and out to roll Beedi. Elders ensure that new bride coming into the household knows rolling Beedi ! Is the industry we are talking about ?

Are we aware how many of the families succumb to tobacco smell inhalation related diseases ? How many of them gradually learn to smoke Beedi as they roll it ?

I know a farmer's family that rolled Beedi during off season but the moment the person exposed himself to it, his eyes displayed signs of some disease. Gradually he started to lose his sight and upon consulting the doctor, he was at-once advised to stop exposure to tobacco. With no option, the family took up jasmine cultivating.

I couldn't believe, the family that struggled to pay fees of their children have sufficient cash and ornaments ready to marry off their girls.

Because of this very industry, paddy fields, coconut/arecanut farms have no workers. Nobody wants a job with a bit of strain while there is an industry luring them, requiring energy sufficient to just sit and move their hands.

Its time we understand what development is, where our efforts should be, what risks our health and what improves.

Why you ban everything? How you live? Boy and girl can't go together, ban beef because cows are gods should not kill, ban liquor, ban bidi, ban cigarettes, after few days ban TV, telephone, mobile and all social media. No need to ban anything let it go as it is but the person should have some control over it.

I totally agree with you, many people destroy their life and their families because of the bad habits.

If there is no liquor or bidi / cigar then person will go something else, he will start to consume drugs, if not drugs then prostitution, if nothing then may be robbery, loot to kill his time. It is totally on the person how to take it in his life.
