Mangaluru, Mar 17: In an incident which occurred on the evening of Monday March 16 at Mogaveerapatna here, a couple that had come to Ullal beach for fun was handed over to the police by locals.
The locals developed suspicion over the twosome as the boy and girl belonged to different communities and also because of their indecent behaviour.
The boy identified as Ubaidulla (19) from Kudroli in the city, and the girl who hails from Moodushedde in Vamanjoor here, were taken into custody by the Ullal police. It is said that both of them are pursuing their PU studies through city-based Matha Tutorials, and hence know each other well.
They had come to the beach in a Honda Activa scooter. Some people who saw them behaving obscenely at the beach, questioned them. They came to know that the two are students of a tutorial college, and belong to different religions. They then called Ullal police and entrusted the couple to their custody.
It is gathered that the two were led to the office of assistant police commissioner, Kalyani Shetty. Mudipu, Ullal, and nearby areas have been experiencing communal flare ups now and then of late on account of incidents which trigger violent backlash. In the light of the volatile situation, the citizens have opined that the student community, which is in the habit of visiting the beaches in Ullal and doing something that has the potential of igniting communal clash.
Zohara (41), mother of Ubaidulla, died of cardiac arrest on Monday, on coming to know that her son had been arrested. She was suffering from heart-related ailments since sometime, sources said.
