Live bomb shell creates scare in Belagavi village


Belagavi, Mar 16 (DHNS): A live mortar bomb shell was found in an open field on the outskirts of Sonoli village in Belagavi taluk on Sunday morning, triggering panic among residents.

The Central Reserve Police Force led by Commandant Mahesh Naik with the assistance of the police blew up the low intensity bomb by late noon. No casualty or property damage was reported following the operation.

A bomb disposal squad from Bengaluru is expected to defuse the bomb on Monday morning.

The village is about 17 kilometres from the city and near the Rakaskoppa dam. Ashok Shantoppa Patil, a resident of Sonoli village, informed the police about the bomb on his field at 7 am on Sunday.

The police rushed to the spot with a dog squad. A bomb detection squad confirmed that it was a live mortar shell. Police Commissioner S Ravi also visited the spot. As a precautionary measure the police have cordoned off the area.
