Mangaluru, Mar 12: In an accident which occurred near Pompei College at Aikala, Kinnigoli, on Wednesday March 11, a girl student was seriously wounded while another escaped with minor nicks and cuts. A recklessly driven Maruti Omni van hit some girl students of the college.

Three M Com students of the college were walking towards the nearby Moorukaveri bus stand after classes to go home, when a Maruti Omni van which approached them at high speed, sped away after hitting them. Mamatha from Muchchoor, who suffered deep wound in her head, was admitted into a private hospital in Mangaluru. Another student, identified as Akshatha, suffered minor injuries.

Suratkal traffic police inspector, Gopalakrishna Bhat, has been investigating the case on the basis of closed circuit television cameras of the said college. It is gathered that the driver of the said van had approached a hotel near Damaskatte before reaching Pompei at high speed, stopped his car very close to a car already parked by the roadside, and had engaged in verbal friction with the driver of the other car. He had then sped ahead at high speed, it is gathered.

Principals of the two colleges at Aikala and several locals feel that there is a need to regulate speed of vehicles near these colleges where about 2,000 students study, by creating speed breakers. They point out that there were humps here in the past, but during the previous asphalting, they were removed.
