Prabha Kumar murder case: Australian police release CCTV footage

Melbourne, Mar 9 (PTI & Agencies): Australian police today released the CCTV footage of IT consultant Prabha Arun Kumar walking from a train station just before she was fatally stabbed and appealed to people for information to crack the baffling case.

The New South Wales police launched a probe following the stabbing of 41-year-old Prabha Arun Kumar, who was on the phone with her husband in India, when the "horrific" attack happened on Saturday in Westmead, a suburb of Sydney.

Prabha, daughter of progressive farmer Mahabala Shetty and Sarojini, hailed from Amtoor near Kalladka in Bantwal taluk. She was the second among six children. One of her brothers also stays in Australia.

Police said the emergency services responded to reports of a seriously injured woman on a public walkway between Argyle Street, Parramatta, and Amos Street, Westmead, at around 9:30pm (local time) on Saturday.

Ambulance Paramedics treated the woman at the scene before transporting her to Westmead Hospital, where she died at about 12:45 am yesterday.

Confirming her identity, the police statement said, it was believed that Prabha got off a train at Parramatta Railway Station about 9pm, before walking along Argyle Street and turning left onto the walkway. Police believe she was attacked while on the walkway.

She sustained a number of injuries, which it is believed were inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon.

Strike Force Marcoala has been formed to investigate the death. It comprises police from Parramatta Local Area Command and State Crime Command's Homicide Squad.

"We are hoping this will jog the memory of anyone who was in the vicinity of Argyle Street, Park Parade or Amos Street that evening, and encourage them to come forward and speak with police," Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Michael Willing, said.

Prabha worked for IT firm Mindtree in 'The Rocks' and had reportedly been working a double shift the day of her death.

Prabha's distraught husband Arun Kumar had reached Australia from Bangalore to formally identify her body, media reports said.

Prabha's husband was on the phone with her when she was brutally stabbed in the park, 'the Daily Telegraph' reported.

"She was talking with her husband Arun Kumar in India when she said 'he stabbed me, darling' before the line went dead," the report said.

Detective Superintendent Willing said her husband was now telling detectives about the conversation Prabha was having with him before she was killed.

"We have some detail in terms of their conversation," he said adding that, "He's understandably extremely distressed."

Meanwhile, an Australian politician Geoff Lee today expressed his shock over the stabbing incident describing it as "a terrible crime".

Lee, a parliamentarian from Paramatta, described the fatal attack as an isolated incident and said attacks in the park were not common.

"This terrible crime it's a really isolated incident and it's a real shock to everybody," he said.

"And I checked with the park management and I think this is the first of such incidents to ever occur in Parramatta Park," Lee said, adding that, "I should let people know it didn't actually happen in the main part of the park."

Indian Australian Association of NSW president Yadu Singh said that Australian community was sad and shocked with the brutal murder of the Indian IT professional.

"It is a tragic and heart-breaking news. Our heart goes out to her family, especially her husband and daughter. We know that NSW Police is investigating this crime to find the culprits, responsible for this heinous crime. We want them to keep our community in the information loop, as there is massive concern and grief in the community," he said.

'Police probing attack with utmost seriousness'

New South Wales Premier Mike Baird today assured India that the fatal attack on Prabha Kumar in a Sydney suburb is being probed by police with utmost seriousness even as a special detective squad was formed to pursue the investigations.

Describing the attack on 41-year-old Prabha Arun Kumar as a "sad event", the Ministry of External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said the assurance was given by Baird during a telephonic conversation with Sanjay Sudhir, Consul General of India in Sydney.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said she was pained to know about the murder and that she was in constant touch with India's Consulate in Sydney which is providing all help.

"I am pained to know abt murder of Prabha Arun Kumar in Sydney. Our Consulate is in touch with her Company there and we promise all help," she said in a tweet.

Akbaruddin told reporters that Sudhir, the victim's husband Arun Kumar, and a representative of her employer Mindtree, an IT firm, had a meeting with the NSW police during which they were informed about a special detective squad being formed to probe the attack.

Asked whether the attack had a racist angle, the spokesperson said one should wait for the outcome of police investigations.

"One should not impute motive, Police are probing the matter. Let was wait for the outcome," he said.

Akbaruddin the External Affairs Minister is herself monitoring the situation.

The NSW police launched a probe following the stabbing of 41-year-old Prabha Arun Kumar, who was on the phone with her husband in India, when the "horrific" attack happened on Saturday in Westmead, a suburb of Sydney.

very heart wrenching. may god give her eternal peace. People working late should take extreme caution and be alert. see that u are dropped or not alone, DONT be on the phone, but may be keep the phone ON so that the other person on the other line knows your whereabouts. Take fast strides, be alert and scream for help if u feel u are being followed, see if u can get help when ur walking a deserted area. Very sad . Other ladies please learn from this.It can happen anywhere India or abroad. we just need to be careful . May be in her circumstances, she may have felt that was the best to do. feel sorry for her daughter

Mrs.Dsouza, i do agree with you...people whilst talking over mobile phones must be extra careful and observe the surroundings just to be extra careful and proactive. These days ppl are so busy on mobile phones...talking to whether family or frnds or whoever... they dont even observe whats happening around them, whats heading towards them or whats behind them... Hyderabad is the worst city for that matter. I see girls particularly on mobiles all the time even whilst walking on the main roads... even whilst riding the two/four whl vehicles... putting others lives in jeopardy... there is something going wrong universally... GOD save us all. Amen!

Is India a safer place then ? every place and country has its own risks and safety is purely personal and at times accidental. We need to protect ourselves.

Very tragic.Does not look like racial attack. In my opinion, we should not give racial angle to this tragic event.however it does reveal that, developed countries have no shortage of antisocial elements. So instead of taking moral high and acting like big brothers, these countries should mind their own business first, instead of preaching other countries. Same with some of the readers who are logically supporting Australia. where does your logic disappears when you unabashedly start bashing India as a whole, when any isolated event takes place?! western apologists!!!

Very sad news to hear, heartfelt condolences to the whole family.

If his event was to take place in India I wonder how many people would be commenting like this regarding the safety in India? these kinds of things happen in India all the time yet when this happens on foreign ground everyone make such a big issue of it? This is bad and Australia needs to take action against this but Australia is not the only country that needs stricter laws.

How could someone work 'double shift'? What was role of her employer Mindtree to assure safety of women workers? Here in India the company does 'cab ' etc. why was this not being done there in Australia, esp when she is senior resource, single woman with a long tenure with company.....the walkway looks extremely deserted & creepy.

Like her, there are so many young Indians working in Australia & New Zealand, all IT professionals with similar lifestyles...Who is to protect them? What are the companies roles in protecting & safety of their staff? Indeed sad for her to die

Heartfelt condolences to all the family members who have to deal with this reality for the rest of their lives, especially their daughter.

Having lived in Canberra for most of my life I can confidently say that, to me, Australians do not discriminate according to race and background. there are some who don't follow the law but that doesn't mean that the country has to suffer too. there are rat bags in India, UAE, Africa, America and every other place in the world,it is not right to judge the country based on the minor performances of people. Plus there is no evidence stating that the attacker was Australian, so don't judge before any proof comes out.
