Udupi, Mar 6: In a heart-warming gesture, Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math on Friday March 6 visited the Dalit colony at Nittur here to know the issues faced by the residents and to propogate the upcoming Virat Hindu Samajotsava scheduled to be held on March 9.

Addressing the gathering, Swamiji said, "When we visit Dalit colony, it does not mean that the practice of untouchability will stop overnight, but when the first step towards this is taken by us, the public will take two steps forward.

"Practice of untouchability does not exist in other religions as in Hinduism. There is no political reason behind my visit. Twenty years ago, I visited such a colony to create awareness among people about untouchability," he added.

Regarding caste discrimination at Sri Krishna Math in Udupi, he said, "I have always welcomed the idea of oneness and I am for equality in the dining hall, but I cannot force any Brahmin to practice the same and dictate where he should sit. It depends on their mindset.

"Savarna Hindus and Dalits are equal before society, and neither community is stronger, because even Dalits believe in the same Hindu god. It is not good to neglect the tribal community. All belong to the same rich Hindu culture," he said.

Speaking on the issue of inter-caste marriage, he said that he does not support inter-caste marriages as they spoil the caste system. "I started the movement for eradication of untouchability in 1970-72. I have fought for a change in the mindset."

"A real Brahmin is one who gives up alcohol and meat," he added.

The Swamiji said that every caste's culture has its own importance, but people should cultivate Hindu traditions. "People of other castes should follow Hindu traditions. Society should achieve equality only by propagating the Hindu dharma. The welfare of the deprived people is the development of Hindu dharma," he said.

Bhaskar, a Dalit community member said, "We are very happy that Swamiji is here. It may hurt some religious leaders. No one has come here before, but Swamiji has come like god to the colony."

Pejawar Swamiji visited many houses and listened to the grievances of the colony people on discrimination in temples, work places, reservations, and facilities provided to them by society.

Baikady Suprasad Shetty, VHP district president, Vasudev Bhat, committee member and others were present.

Swamiji I appreciate your move. Same thing we are doing since college time but not with media people. Thats the difference.

I have a simple question to you... Even though it is 2015, why in Udupi Shri.Krishna temple, Brahmins have separate dining hall & rest of the communities not allowed to eat with them in the same hall ?????

Very honest in his words...Swamiji knows where are the limits when he says about sitting together in dininig hall or inter caste marriage...we can become like brahman by giving up meat and alcohol but that's it .... end of the road...caste has to remain..that is the bitter truth

It was heartening to see sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of pejawar math-an esteemed head of the Hindu religion reaching out to the dalits.I hope the other religious heads will take this as an example and welcome the dalits. it is an affront to human dignity that people are not treated as equal because of their birth. We all own this world.

Why not get rid of the caste system completely Swamiji? Untouchability will continue to exist in the mind even if it isn't practiced openly!

It's a good gesture, but the fact remains the same unless you make them feel equal.
Just a observation, in their own home they are sitting on the ground and swamiji is sitting on a chair......
Call them for functions, give your daughter or son to their son or daughter, make them stay in same queue while offering prayers/ Pooja....

BJP (B Janardhan Poojary) is already ahead in this pursuit(to bring equality among the oppressed in the society)..., in fact he try to reduce discrimination by giving opportunity in temple rituals to all the oppressed section of the community.
Sriman Pejavar shri's action is commendable in this regard..., As he is rightly said it, to take this matter further society should put up 2 step further (i.e., by allowing this relationship to extend in matrimonial unity).
One day the Krishna Mutt's rituals be headed by a dalit purohit and let brahmin's take sacred water from the hands of a dalit purohit. The moment this happens Hinduism will be a great force to reckon across the world.
Let the mighty force of the parivar outfits work towards this to happen.

    KUDOS!!! GREAT INITIATIVE!!

Next, Pejawar Swamiji should encourage inter-caste marriages and dining for all castes in the same hall of temples.

This will be a landmark decision and will help break down barriers in Hinduism....only then will all backward classes welcome this initiative.

Why don't you appreciate the positive points?

Most of the Indians when they go abroad, do not practice untouchability or caste system. In Kenya, the Mangaloreans celebrate all the important Indian festivals and everyone participates irrespective of one's religion, caste or creed. Hats off to Pejawar Swamiji for his bold step in visiting the Dalit colony. Many people just preach, but he had the moral courage to visit this colony.
