Mangaluru, Mar 1: At the general session of the city corporation council held on Saturday February 28, it was decided to write to the government to review its stand on self assessment property tax system. It may be recalled that the government had issued show cause notice to the city corporation council, relating to its resolution to nullify the hike of 15 percent affected on property tax within the city limits, when the council was not in operation.
The session held on Saturday was presided over by mayor, Mahabala Marla. At the meeting, opposition leader, Premananda Shetty of BJP asked the ruling Congress party not to fool the people with its gimmicks. He accused the Congress, which had promised not to hike the property tax during the election campaigns, of going back on its promise and raising the property tax.
The council meeting held in July 2014 had decided to reverse the decision to hike property tax by 15 percent, which was taken when the administrator was in charge of the corporation. The government had recently sought clarifications from the city corporation, giving it time to provide a convincing reply failing which it said that the resolution would be nullified.
The mayor said that the city corporation council stands committed to its earlier stand of reverting to the previous year's property tax rates.
