Mangaluru, Mar 1: On Saturday February 28, over eight Hindu Samajotsava-related banners were found to have been damaged at places falling within the limits of Ullal and Konaje police stations, while a tailoring shop was torched, partially destroying it, at T C Road in Thokottu here. These incidents happened late night on Friday.
'Nityananda Tailoring Shop' owned by Vasudeva Poojary and located at Thokkottu Volapete was partially burnt in the incident. Stock of clothes inside the shop including stitched clothes and those given by people for stitching turned into ashes. Loss in this incident has been put at Rs 2 lacs. The loss would have been more, but for the fact that a photographer returning home after attending a programme saw raging fire and alerted the concerned.
Deputy commissioners of police,K Santosh Babu and N Vishnuvardhan, assistant commissioner of police, Kalyan Shetty, Ullal station house officer, Pavitra Teja, and sub-inspector, Bharathi, visited the spot. Health and family welfare minister, U T Khadar, and BJP district vice president, Chandrahas Ullal, apart from zilla panchjayat vice president, Satish Kumpala, visited the spot.
Some people felt that prohibitory order clamped in the area,which is being enforced strictly from 6 pm onwards by the police, had enabled miscreants to sneak out and engage in these activities without the fear of getting noticed. They said in normal course, movement of people in these areas continued till around midnight, but because of prohibitory order, the roads were deserted. The incidents occurred before 11 pm, it is said.
Zilla panchayat vice president, Satish Kumpala, said that the aim of the mischief mongers in these cases was to disrupt peace in the society. He called upon the people belonging to different communities to live harmoniously. U T Khadar condemned the incidents. He said that all support would be extended by Ullal municipality and tailors association to enable the tailor to resume his business. He said he was confident that the policemen would be able to find out the people behind these activities with the help of CCTV cameras located in Thokkottu Volapete.
