Davanagere, Feb 21: Two students of Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies at Harihar in the district were killed on the morning of Friday February 20.
The deceased have been identified as C M Shafique Ur Rehman (21) from Ahmedabad, and Shivani Dwivedi (21) from Kanpur, UP. Both had secured admission into the MBA course run by the institution last year, and were in the third semester.
A number of students, as a routine, had gone out of their hostels for a morning walk. When these two were on Tungabhadra Railway Bridge at around 8.30 am when Bengaluru- Hubli inter city express train came that way and mowed down the two ill-fated students, it is learnt. As both were wearing ear plugs attached to their cell phones, they remained inadvertent about the arrival of the train. At the last minute, Rehman observed that a train was coming their way. He ran to cross to the other side of the bridge as he and Shivani were only about 15 ft away from the end of the bridge. But he changed his mind, and ran back to take Shivani to safety. But it was too late, and the train hit them, as a result of which both were tossed about 30 feet down to the edge of the river, eyewitnesses said.
