Mangalore, Feb 20: A special programme on ‘Positing Social Sciences’ was conducted by the department of Political Science, St Aloysius College (Autonomous) on Friday, February 20.
The programme was to make a positive change in the conventional ideologies about the arts stream.
The programme was inaugurated by Shonna Rodrigues, M Phil, Phd a scholar from JNU and has done research on ‘Conflicts of Children in Manipur and Tripura’. She said social science is not only about the theories but also about the practicalities which it teaches for everyday management.
“Social Sciences are medium of social change because it deals with human beings”, said Shonna Rodrigues on the occasion.
“The basic role of education is to create better human beings”, said Fr Swebert D’Silva, principal of the college on the occasion.
The program was to connect the social sciences to the campus, a first of its kind in the college. A panel discussion was held, with a panel of comprising of Shonna Rodrigues, Fr Walter Andrade SJ (Finance officer), Nobert Lobo (Head of Dept of Economics), Smitha Hegde (Dept of Biochemistry) and four student panellists, Satshya, Hussain, Mallika and Adheena. All gave their presentation on the topic.
They discussed how ‘social sciences empower you; it gives you the power to decide. Money can make you glad, sad and mad but it is the social sciences which controls and studies human civilization. It tells where we are actually going and where we came from. It helps us know the mystery of life’.
At the end, the panel was open for questions and then Fr Walter Andrade concluded the session by saying if we have love and commitment towards what we study then we will be able to form better opinions and conclusions. He then quoted what Smitha Hegde had said, “Nobody in this world can make you feel inferior without your permission, empower yourself”.
