Beltangady, Feb 19: A person who was trying to catch a snake died on he morning of Wednesday February 18 after having been bitten by it. He has been identified as Jerald Rodrigues (55), a resident of Kettigudde near Punjalakatte in the taluk.
Jerald used to work as head-load worker in Punjalakatte. After learning that a snake had sneaked into the house of a businessman in Punjalakatte town, Jerald went there to catch the snake. Although the family members urged him not to undertake this adventure, he went ahead with the task.
After finding the hideout of the snake, and wrongly identifying it as a python, Jerald gripped the snake. However, the snake, which proved to be common krait, bit him instantly. The locals who immediately went there, identified it as a krait, and killed the snake on the spot.
Jerald did not bother about the snake bite too much, and went home after consuming native medicine. On Wednesday morning, his health developed complications. He was rushed to the government hospital at Badyar, but he had died of snake venom by then.
Jerald is survived by wife and three sons.
