Mangaluru, Feb 16: MLC Ivan D'Souza on Monday February 16 said that he has submitted a proposal to higher education minister R V Deshpande to start evening classes in Karnataka Polytechnic (KPT) so as to create more employment opportunities for the youth especially in industrial sectors.
Addressing a press meet at his office here, Ivan D'Souza said, "A proposal has already been submitted to R V Deshpande demanding the commencing of evening polytechnic classes in KPT. Though infrastructure is available, the government should upgrade the existing furniture and appoint staff for teaching.
"The 'Sandhya Polytechnic' at KPT will help many by creating technical hands thereby giving rise to employment opportunities while the district is growing industrially. Subjects like mechanical engineering, electronics and communication and electrical engineering shoud be introduced," he said.
He also assured of providing MLC fund for the cause.
He added that he has urged the government to provide midday meals to the ITI students. "In a growing city like Mangaluru, the cost of living has increased. Through online application, several students from rural areas and various places of the state are joining colleges in the city. At present they cannot afford education, as the cost of living is high, hence many students are quitting college. Hence the government should start midday meal programme even at in ITI college. There are one lac ITI students in the state," he said.
He further said that during the Council session he had asked 45 questions about various problems of the district out of which he received 41 answers.
He said he brought to the attention of the government the condition of the houses of civic workers in Jeppu Mahakali Padpu. Social welfare minister Anjaneya has assured of constructing a full-fledged residential building for the civic workers at a cost of Rs 4 crores, he said.
"Students who have completed their BBM and done masters in MCom had no provision for teaching commerce. On bringing this to the notice of the government the circular was immediately changed and provision was made for teaching the subject," he said.
To a question about the demand for increasing police force in communally sensitive areas of the district, he said the government has the proposal under review. "A police outpost has been sanctioned at Eshwaramangil. Proposals for creating a sub-division at Bantwal, setting up of traffic police station in Bantwal taluk, upgrading the Dharmasthala outpost, and setting up of new police station at Siddakatte and to establish RAF have been sent," he said.
Various other questions were also raised about the problems in the district, he added.
