Where is Kuppandoor? - Wonder people looking at this board in Karkala

Karkala, Feb 14: You question any citizen from Karkala taluk about the location of Kuppandoor. You might just see confusion in their eyes, expression totally being at sea about it, or you may also see them scratching their heads for an answer.

Of course, there is no place with the name, 'Kuppandoor' in the taluk or Udupi district. But the big board planted by Mangaluru division of National Highways Authority of India here claims that the spot where it stands happens to be the starting point of the road leading to Kuppandoor. The board claiming that the road diversion which purportedly leads to Kuppandoor can be found at Bajagoli Junction.

This board was recently installed for the convenience of people who travel to their destinations through alternative roads in view of the closure of Shiradi Ghat stretch of national highway 75 between Mangaluru and Bengaluru.

The place in question happens to be Kukkundoor, an important place in the taluk. The people resent the fact that the name of such an important place has been distorted because of the irresponsibility of some government officials. They hope that the concerned will correct their mistake at least now.

Uday Salian, member of the taluk Agricultural Produce Market Committee, has blamed the officials concerned for this faux paus. He asserts that it is the duty of the concerned to properly read and make ammends before a board is prepared and installed.

No doubt work of non-kannadiga and non-local together otherwise kukkundoor is a familiar place. I anyway guessed it was a typo error for kukkundoor by the above two "adhikaprasangi" minds- one giving the new name and another blindly translating to kan script without type-checking

Yes Mr. Ravi. You are right. Imposition of Kannada on Tulu is going on. There are some people especially so called higher caste who are ashamed of speaking tulu though they are born in this place.

Just now I verified in Google the road map between Karkala & Udupi and found that there is a village called Kukkundur (ಕುಕ್ಕಂದೂರು-postal pin-576117) just 4-5 km from Karkala. Most probably this has been wrongly written as Kuppandoor by NHAI.

This may be Kannada name for some Tulu original name of the village.
In Tulunadu there is a very bad precedent of translating the Tulu names of the villages literally into Kannada. For example PoopadiKallu village near Moodabidri is called as - Hoo Haakuva Kallu in Govt records. If you ask any one in Moodabidri where is this Hoo Hakuva Kallu no one can answer. Similarly Pongar village near Soorinje has been renamed as Ponnagiri by some temple priests just last week and no one objected to it. There are several such instances where the Temple Priests have changed the Tulu names of the villages into Sanskrit or Kannada names without the approval of villagers. Since the temple priests cleverly connect such names to the deity of that village the gullible god-fearing villagers never protest.
