Hassan, Jan 27: Thieves returned richer by over Rs 6 crore after successfully entering Hirisave branch of Kaveri Grameena Bank in Channarayanapatna taluk of the district on Sunday January 25 night and swindling away valuables and cash. The bank was not open on Monday on account of Republic Day.
The thieves rigged a hole to the rear side wall of the bank building. They gained access to the locker of the bank and took away ornaments pledged by farmers for their gold loans. Cash amounting to Rs 14.5 lac found inside the locker was also taken away by the thieves.
Although the bank branch has been provided with siren system, it is claimed that the siren failed to go off as the thieves had severed the wire connected to the siren.
As per an information, the bank branch has sanctioned gold loans to over 800 customers by accepting over 61 kg gold ornaments by way of pledge. Preliminary reports said the worth of ornaments taken away is over six crore rupees.
District superintendent of police, Ravi Chennannanavar, who visited the spot and directed investigations, said teams have been formed to nab the gang of thieves involved with this theft.
