Mangaluru, Jan 23: The 26th National Road Safety week jointly organized by the district administration, Regional Transport Authority (RTA) and the police department was inaugurated by S R Bansal, chairman and director of Corporation Bank.
After the inauguration, S R Bansal said, " It is very important in life to cultivate traffic sense and to follow traffic rules. When children get educated on traffic rules, they can pass on the same to the future generation."
He called upon the children to be crusaders in following traffic rules which will in turn help the nation in following them in better ways.
On this occasion, social workers like U Hasanabba, Saharabanu, J Abdul Raud, Nelson Periera, Venu Murugan who helped at the time of road accidents, were honored.
Mangaluru police commissioner, Murugan in his address said, "The highest numbers of deaths reported in India are not due to severe chronic diseases but due to road accidents. Accidents have become routine, hence the issue should be taken up very seriously.”
"Traffic rules cannot be enforced by only booking cases. Rules should be discussed with the people and awareness must be created. People must follow them voluntarily," Murugan added.
Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said, "Road safety measures should be included in the school syllabus and I will send this proposal to the government. When they become part of education, then children will imbibe these rules in their life."
He expressed that laws will be successfully implemented only when there is public involvement.
MLA J R Lobo said, "People are aware about road safety rules but the rules are violated due to lack of punishment. Proper measures can be enforced when officers and technical experts discuss them in workshops, prepare an action plan for the problem and send a proposal to the government. Then only can change be brought about."
He also said that people are not following the lane discipline strictly which leads to various accidents and proper discipline in traffic can be brought about through proper enforcement of laws.
Superintendent of police S P Sharanappa also spoke on the occasion.
RTO Afzal Ahamed Khan, Rajavarma Ballal and others were present.
